Nothing sounds exactly like a TAB V376 or a Siemens V276 because they had the custom square Haufe transformers with the typed "H.H." labels and were all discrete (no opamps). Later modules can be good but they will be different sounding because
they used different transformers (later ones that are usually round, still good just different) and they started using (the excellent, but different) blue NTP made opamps (square blue boxes that say "linear amplifier") and were no longer discrete. The V376a and V676a are like that. All the ones that end in 76 are dedicated mic pres with 76 db gain and the ones that end in 72 are line amps with 35-40 dbs but can be modified for more gain and used as mic pres. As far as dealers, I recommend vintagecity.de, sonicworld.eu, Vintage King and ebay. If you go vintage, remember it can be a crapshoot and that stuff can either break and be impossible or pain to fix or it might work perfectly every day for 50 years and outlive you.

There are some mic pres similar to the TAB/Telefunken V376. They would include the Siemens V276 (very close but the top end of the V376 is a little different), the TAB made V376a, the Neumann V476 (a and b versions), and the TAB made V676a. All of these were German broadcast modules. With proper gain staging you don't overload something in your signal chain. For example you have the mic going into the mic pre and typically you have a compress after than and then the audio goes to your recorder. You don't want to turn the pre-amp up too loud and overload the compressor. If you have an eq after that, you don't want to turn up the compressor's make up gain too loud or you can overload the eq. Some compressors and eq's overload easily and you have to be careful with the gain. Some can take more gain without a problem. Thanks for the kind words about my music.

i'm using a Wunder CM7 GT w/ M7 Capsule Condenser Mic - retails at $3,500.00 so I don't think thats the problem its the best mic I have ever tried (tried neumann's, akg's, royer's, AEA's, etc.) The kind of music I'm recording is mainly rock, folks, blues, jazz, bluegrass, a lot of harmonies. What is gain staging issue? I MUST KNOW!

Yeah the neverending problem is well lets say I do the melody of a song sounds okay then add a harmony starts to distort then another harmony starts to really sound well you read what I said it's tragic with all this money spent on all this gear. I do find that if I tweak EQ processors or change and/or limit the amount of plug-ins I can get by "okay" however the only way to prevent the distortion is to keep the faders in PT HD at about -8 if I remember correctly. very low.

Thanks for reading. I appreciate it.

I enjoyed reading your posts about 376 preamps. I REALLY enjoyed your myspace songs...so smooth and musical. Thanks for sharing these!

Is there a safe and inexpensive source for a 376 or similar pre? I would like to get a sound like this for my vocals. I'm using an AK47

    Any recommendations?

It seems I might have to do a lot of research.

I'm using an AVALON 737. If I was smart I'd just keep using this, but the grass always seems greener...

PS. Please put me on email list for music releases you do

    thank you!
