Thread Starter | Is vst sounds bad?
I ask this here, because many of you are big engineers with golden ears I trust. I was at a hungarian so called pro forum, where many claims that you cannot make a proper mix out of nuendo/cubase, not just because the softwares sounds bad, but the whole vst sound very bad. Every piece of vst plug is mediocre sounding because of vst. So the question: is vst sounds bad or worse than any other? |

| No, this is a silly statement made by uninformed people. The VST system sounds great and there's proof done in research I've seen on a few sites.

What *is* true is that people will blame poor results on their tools before they'll blame their skills. |

VST sounds fine. Do all the plugins that are VST sound good? No. Thats the same for every other format of plugin though. |

I'd be curious if there is a sonic difference between the DX and VST version of the same plug-in. Oh and just FYI tamasdragon, the correct English for your topic would be: "Does VST Sound Bad?" |

Verified Member | You'll have to define what VST is and what the others options are, what the good things that are sought after are and what the negatives are. When doing so, I think you'll see why and how VST is perfectly adequate for the purpose. VST can be seen as a data link, supporting up to 64 bit floating point if my memory serves me correct. As long as this link transfers data correctly, and it certainly does, there's not much that can go wrong, right? |

There's no reason VST can't sound good. There may be plenty of poor plugs written for it, but there's no technical reason that bits can't be passed to a plug, processed as intended, and passed back. There are pros and cons to each architecture, including bits of precision, float vs. fixed, what gets passed plug to plug, and latency issues (how much, does it report correctly, does it report at all...). Each application can also have better or worse implementation, including latency compensation. None of this means that VST itself is incapable of high quality.

Oh, sorry for my bad english. So the discussion was started when a few guys stated that every vst plugin sounds shit, because the whole vst standard sound shit. The only two format which can sound good are rtas and even better tdm. My point was to ask some real pros, what do they think about it. So I hope I made it more clear now, so please vote. There are good/bad sounding plugs using every architecture. I have bad sounding TDM plugs. Some of my best plugs are DX and RTAS. It just depends on the host and how the plugs were written. Regards, Bruce |

the whole topic to me looks like a "conservative" style marketing campaign! due to the commercial disadvantage that VST on windows can't be copy protected in a safe way, someone seems to look for a cooked argument to tear down the whole technology, and the cheapest and most hurtful one is to say "it sounds bad"... is the hydra of oligopoly raising her heads again, being mad about good sounding cheap competion? tutt

There's also good and bad VST host implementation just to add to the confusion...

Vst's sound better with my Prism Ada8's that they sound with my former Layla 24... ![]() I think one shouldn't omit the importance of the converter used before making a viable statement... |
