UPS - yes or no? If yes, for what ?

I just picked up a Compaq UPS.

I remembered that someone said not to plug an amp into one, since this would limit the amps ability to output fully during loud passages. This one puts out 1600W into 10A, seems like it would be enough... anyone care to elaborate?

So, my question is pretty general: What should be plugged into this UPS ? Computer only?

I am building a small mastering room, the house is from the 1800's and the electricity leaves a lot to be desired.

There have been a couple of power failures this year.

(There are spikes coming from a fridge, of course a total no-no in any studio, but still, it IS an issue) Maybe it, alone, should be on the UPS ?

For a couple of thousand $ I can have a new power line installed, but I'm hopeful (perhaps just stupid) that this UPS may to some degree help me in my quest for clean, silent power.

Anyone have expertise on issues like this?

I have a beep from one of my screens that needs sorting out too, seems like a phase issue of some sort. The computer is in a separate room, do the screens need to be powered from the same outlet, perhaps that would solve it?

stike Any wisdom on the subject? stike

Thanks

Generally a ups is only needed to save data if your power goes down and you forgot to save that last awesome take. I just save quite often instead as I had a ups which always used to put a noise through my whole system. I guess I had a crap ups but.... You may or may not really need 1, I dunno. Mine would run 2500 watts for an hour. So find your power ratings for each unit and the power of your ups and you'll have a rough answer whether or not its viable to run your amp through it. Though wait till its fully charged before hooking up anything.

Hm, constructive input, there.

Thanks mate

Still, UPS's seem to be over-rated, by the looks of some of the comments here on gear slutz.

I'm looking to get the noise Out of my power line, not put more in!

The unit itself has a whirring sound, and a hum, so it would have to sit in my computer iso box.

I'm starting to think it is not gonna cover me, though.

Thanks for the input, though, muchly appreciated

What about for punch and transient response, would a "buffer" like a UPS slow down the performance of amps? Is it just a hi-fi myth?

The Supra power conditioner/filter I tried did zero to improve the currents sensitivity to surges from fluorescent lights in the neighboring room (don't use 'em, but still), and fridge.

So, what to do?

Not too sure, though I'm sure some of the others will have some good info for you soon.
