Get the best mix you can, with the least compression/limiting on the output as you can. Don't worry about volume. Don't down-convert or dither. wise words....if you need to ask that kind of question on a mastering forum you might wanna re-think doing the mastering yourself....good luck

Why it's always suggested to compress as little as possible on the mixbus is beyond my understanding.

One reason is because you can always add more compression later, but it is hard, or impossible, to remove it if you add too much. Use what you need to gel the mix, or get the tone you like, but not more than that, if possible. But, there's no law against it of course, so suit yourself.

I think this general advice is more aimed at those who don't really know how to set up a compressor, yet have heard that it can make things fat.

it needs a lot of experience to switch between " mix mode " and "mastering mode ".
it`s a brain thing .
if u realy wanna do it then finish your mix in the mix mode session.
after that switch your brain and go into mastering mode and another session .
