Thumbs up Duncan Sheik “White Limousine” incl. Kevin Killen stems

I recently bought the new album by Duncan Sheik “White Limousine+DVD Rom”. I was expecting great music and maybe an extra home video of Kevin Killen mixing & dancing in the control room.... Instead I got stems.
That’s right.

“This DVD contains the parts to all of Duncan Sheik’s songs from White Limousine, as well as an integrated lesson file that is part of Ableton Live 5.”

How cool is that?! All 44.100 Hz, 16 Bit Wave-files you can load in any DAW.

You can use them as reference tracks, do some remixing and even try some DYI stem-mastering if you don’t like what Bob Ludwig did.

Check it out here

Cheers,
Martijn.

This record rocks! I was surprised to hear at first that they tracked the entire record in Pro Tools @ 24/48.

Kevin Killen is my hero! He's one of the finest mixing engineers today (or any year).

I had heard that Duncan's first album, which has some great songs also, was done on original blackface Adats. Any truth to that?

Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill from 1995 was recorded on original blackface Adats (and Euphonix desk I may add), so it wouldn’t surprise me if Duncan Sheik’s acclaimed 1996 debut was recorded that way also.

It was produced by Rupert Hine and, according to his website, one of his favourite albums.

Yup, probably likely about the ADAT's. I remember watching the press kit video on Sheik's first album with Rupert Hine and it showed some studio cips. One part that stood out is a clip showing Sheik tracking the vocals to the song "The End of Outside" in a huge live room with an SM57 in hand. Refreshing!

I'll try and track down a link to that vid.

Okay, but Alanis' sound was brought by Glen Ballard.
Great record, BTW.

I love Duncan's song "Barely breathing" with BRILLIANT bass player Pino Palladino.

WOW.

Very skilled songwriter.

The only thing that bothers me when listening to his records is that his voice has got that "trumpetish" sound and I get tired after 4-5 songs.

Just like another great guy David Sylvian, but David has that trembling vibrato I can't stand for longer than 20minutes.

And like Michael Bolton, whom I respect for a huge voice and power, but can't stand for more than 2 songs, because he sings literally EVERY song at his full power and ALWAYS gets to the high C. Tiring.

Whatever, who cares for Michael Bolton these days anyway, when it's all about groove, pumping bass&kick, extreme loudness sorta thing, phatness and stuff... Sad but true.

Dear Bob (am I really talking to myself? ),

It's good that you don't get tired after already two consequent posts of yours.

Good and scary simultaneously.

Consider some pills.

Or sumtin.
