It will probably peak at around 0db because its limited.

A good master is one that sounds good in the car and club systems.

Dont judge your mastered track on the same monitors you produced the track on.

A good master is a master that presents the mix in the best possible way while translating well (sounding good) on most playback systems from radio, computer speakers, to large monitors & club systems. If your mix is perfect, the mastered version should sound as good on all these systems. If your mix is OK but has room to be enhanced the mastered version should sound better.

Mastered tracks usually peak at around 0,3db or slightly lower if compatibility with iTunes or MP3 is important.

But even on the monitors you produced the master should sound better than the mix. It should translate well everywhere and should meet your demands in terms of loudness.

One thing I love about the Focusrite VRM box is that when I master I take a commercial released master and listen to it in all three rooms (the studio, bedroom and living room) I notice they all sound the same in each room. When my master sound different in any room then I know some frequency or phasing or effects are incorrect. I work at it until that sound is consistent as I switch to each room.

When the client is happy, it sounds better than the mix, translates well to all systems, and the punters think it sounds good. That's an easy question to answer. It's how you get there that involves a lot of skill and experience.

No! That has nothing to do if its a good master or not. -0.3dB is a good peak level as this allows for mathematical error when you convert it.

There is no difference in audible loudness from 0dB to -0.3dB, if thats what your worried about.

Your ears will tell you if its a good master when you listen to it on many sound sysytems
