Demo Mastering for a non-engineer...

So, at some point I want to get into the details of mastering and engineering, but for now I'm a producer who is doing demos and I need them to sound the best I can.

I've been using a combo of PSP VintageWarmer 2 and Voxengo Elephant, using Mix Aid 1 preset for PSP and Masters Punch +3 for Elephant. (With a little tweaking on PSP, not a fan of drive, plus tweak knee depending on the reduction).

I'm wondering though if Ozone 5 would be something worth checking out - I notice all my mixes have a similar quality, slightly unprofessional, regardless of what instrumentation/organic/VST/samples I use. Thinking I should try different mastering, since Ozone has tons of presets.

If you have a good equalizer, a couple compressors, and some effects, that's all the effects you would need to make it sound great.

Right, but I guess my question is, is Ozone a good way for someone to "master" their track as a demo?

Definitely. But what I was trying to convey is that you could get the same results if you already have PSP/Voxengo plugins.

I would say no a good analog compressor eq and limiter is more mastering quality

He's asking about plugins for demo mastering.

Try this for mastering your own material, you might not even need more plug ins

Using presets for mastering generally sucks, so like Ozone 4, Ozone 5 presets probably suck too. They're just to radical to give you anything useful. With that said, you can get some excellent results with Ozone.

Monitoring is the most important piece of equipment when mastering. The A EQ may sound better than the B EQ, and the C limiter can have a lower distortion than the limiter D. But if your monitoring is tinted, there's no chance to hear the difference and no chance to reach a correct result.

Seriously, for a demo I wouldn't over-think it. Level matching songs (by ear), assemble for album flow, etc, maybe limit for some level. Demos are (usually) primarily for assessing and developing arrangement, mix ideas, or the needs at the recording stage.
