Really? I thought it was damn near perfect. Not too loud, not too weedy. I can only assume it's gonna get smushed Quote:

Remastered? What a joke, this album is an example of nearly perfect recording, mixing, mastering - you just don't **** with perfection.

Agreed. It's one of my reference when it comes to rock/alt music. Perfect mix and mastering.

Yeah but they will use the coveted flat MBit dither on that and maybe it even will be released in 96kHz!
That will change everything! |

At the moment there is one RATM debut record that sounds great.
At some point in the future there will be two versions of said RATM record, of which one will sound great, and the other one either great or not so great. Some people will maybe enjoy listening to the new version more than the old one, others maybe won't.
Is this a bad thing?

You guys don't understand. They are remastering all the old demos and b sides from when ratm just started, the old songs that were never professionally mastered. As well as mastering the live shows.

Was there ever a vinyl version, I vaguely remember looking for it and being told it was only released on tape and cd. Richer Sounds in Plymouth used to use it to demo hifi systems standard many years ago.
In my top 5 albums of all time for sure.

| Typical of a record company trying to re-package and re-$ell something successful.

That's why I don't buy new CDs anymore (or not all), I prefer to do some research and then look on ebay for the exact release I'm looking for (vinyl or CD) most of the time I get them cheaper too.

A timely reminder for me: I heard the album when it first came out, courtesy of Bleach who I was working with at the time, but for some reason never got around to buying it.
This thread nudged me, and it's just turned up from Amazon - 1992 version, mastered by Bob Ludwig. Great stuff, surprisingly dynamic and a good example of every part of the process coming together. I notice it plays very well at moderate volume, I've no particular desire to crank it up, it just works.
As well as the obvious rap influence, sounds like RATM had been listening to early Black Sabbath - I think I remember Neil from Bleach mentioning that at the time.

well, got a copy. Exactly as predicted. About 4db reduction needed to match the original. I can hear distortion in the verse of Take The Power Back. ****. THAT.

I had it on vinyl when it came out but my girlfriend at that time kept it. My record player was crap anyway so the CD version was an improvement to me.

Some idiot over the summer donated both their original CDs of "RATM" and "Evil Empire" to my local Goodwill. Guess who now owns BOTH of them, for just $6! |

Man, I hope they're not actually remastering the 1992 album. It's already super hot for its day... -8dBfs RMS on the high points.

I just listened to this recently on my headphones, it really does sound awesome! Certainly doesn't need the sound changing, hopefully they just repackage it.

I won't be! | "Not buying it" is not enough. We also need to stick it in their ear - or inbox - that we don't want them messing with our favorite music - be it Rage or the Bee Gees or Roy Orbison in the name of more profits.
We must Rage against the money grubbing remastering brickwalling Machine! |

The problem is if it replaces the old one; then fans who don't all ready own it will be forced to buy an inferior version.
Personally I would prefer some Deluxe box set; All the albums on vinyl and CD, a T-shirt, stickers and a poster all in a metal tin.

I love original record,
it's one of my fav for monitor/system check
in this genre a real gem
btw, could anyone point me to any 'remastering' which wasn't a complete fu£$ up ?
what 'remastering' means is slapping extra 4dB rms and creating flat, 2-dimensional recording
shame on them 'remasterers' !

shame on them 'remasterers' ! | Good sentiment Red, but be careful with your last sentence! You're like blaming the soldiers for Vietnam.
Blame must be leveled where it's due. Most mastering engineers don't just decide they're going to squash the life out of these legacy recordings. It's coming from label execs and in some cases the artists themselves.
Write letters to those two groups of people, but be nice. Tell them you like their works, and you are afraid that original sound will be lost in the reissues. The key is numbers. We all have to man our PENS and KEYBOARDS, and let them know. |

The first Sisters of Mercy album "First Last and Always" was so quiet on the original version, Despite being recorded at Strawberry Studios the production was lacking. The 2006 remaster is better you can actually hear all of the instruments.
