First off, I am not looking to get into the whole loudness discussion, because it has been beaten to death a couple of times.
I am just looking for peoples input on new (2011 - 2012) popular records that YOU think sound good. No need to justify, argue, or anything like that.
Country, R n B, Pop, Rock, Hip Hop, Metal, whatever. It's all good. I am trying to think about something that pleases you sonically, rather than performance.
Sounds excellent! I have no idea what category you would put it in....
OG
My first thought (listening to Remainder The Black Dog) is it's very pleasing (not talking about style or performance, although I think that's awesome too).
It's very clear, and not just a barrage of stuff. Nice pick
Old-school tape and analog production, sounds great (although it's hard to separate the performance and writing aspect, since I'm a fan). It's a mix of fairly understated Mark + acoustic stuff, with a few more hard-rocking tunes. Engineered by Chuck Ainlay and Guy Fletcher, mastered by Bob Ludwig.
Alison Krauss & Union Station - Paper Airplane, mastered by Brad Blackwood (and won him a Grammy) last year. I can't stand the music, but there's no doubting it sounds fantastic and clear.
Verneri Pohjola 'Aurora'. Modern jazz album. He is a trumpeter. The whole album is beautifully recorded and the percussion is amazing and spacious. Feels like u are in the middle of the room with them. It's one of my new favourite sound quality checking CDs!

What do you mean by 'new' exactly?
I thought last years Kate Bush album "50 Words for Snow" sounded lovely. Rich warm mids with a delicate yet precise top end, nice clear open sound with no silly squashing going on. Great tone to that album. Really enjoyed the music too, although I could probably do without the Elton 'Candle in my' John duet though...

I believe Doug Sax had the final tinker.
I love the sound of that album too. It would be regarded as sonically dull by many but the vibe is perfect.
It's really refreshing to hear a production like that one. I actually really like the song with Elton John. The first time I listened to the album I thought wow that's cool, I wonder who the male singer is... And it turned out to be Elton John!
The remaster of The Red Shoes and The Director's Cut are mastered in a similar fashion.

It's an alright song but Elton is just a bit hammy. I've never really been a fan of him, although I respect that he is a very talented bloke.
The sonic tone really suits that material. It has a feeling of night, an almost pillowy softness to it with delicately crisp little glistens on the top. Matches the theme and artwork perfectly.
It feels a bit darker than Aerial, and that also makes perfect sense.
Re: rules - well exactly! She's KATE BUSH!! She doesn't need to compete with brash, attention seeking kids.
I have all her original stuff in my collection (CD + vinyl) ;
Is The Director's Cut a complete re-MIX? been meaning to check that out
Very cool re: your Kate Bush vinyl collection :-)
The Director's Cut is re-recorded versions of songs from the sensual world and the red shoes. The songs are in lowered keys but some do retain some of the elements of the original songs's multitracks.
The deluxe edition comes with the original master of The sensual world and the newly re-mastered version of the red shoes.
Slash's new solo record sounds great. Have to turn it up a couple notches more than the usual stuff.
That's interesting. I read that the last slash album got sent back to the mastering engineer as it was "too hot", which is insane considering it still maxed out at around -5RMS.
Maybe on this new one they made sure the job was done properly!

You've probably measured it wrong, sir. Most of the smashed rock records now it's about -9/-10RMS. St'Anger was around -6.5 AFAIK (being totally flat and distorted as hell). I haven't measured Slash record but it does not sound to me like -5 range. More like -10.

The Changstar forum has a lot of great recommendations for great sounding albums, old and new. Just don't let on you are a mastering engineer, or they will try and eat you for breakfast. I do wish the audiophile and pro audio communities could get along better...
