Mastering for a Label

Hi, I am getting more and more work mastering for various different record labels.

I was wondering if anyone knows of a good technique for keeping tracks consistent for a label i.e. all sounding reasonably the same balance of frequencies and volume.

Firstly, congratulations and well done. Secondly, I would listen to the previous material before mastering the new stuff. I do this when clients send me album tracks to master over an extended period. That way I can normally assimilate the kind of sound I went for previously. If you want to re-use settings, just make a note of them or, if working ITB, save everything in your DAW.

Just do the best you can for each track!
The label will get the consistent sound by picking the tracks they want to represent.

The different labels I work with often have different preferences for the results they want to hear after the mastering process. Some have loudness as a priority, some like the tracks brighter with less bottom end, others prefer a deep rich, warm sound with lots of clarity. I always consult with the label about their preferences before I begin working for them and I also make a note of any feedback they give.

In order to keep those differences fresh in my mind I take a minute or two to quickly reference a few of the tracks I've previously worked in comparison to the new piece of work.

Congratulations! If the record label releases only one genre of music, I would probably send them three different masters of the same track and use the one they choose as a reference next time.

Listen to the tracks and use metering. The Dorroughs are a must. Frequency analysis, etc. Some stuff just can't be helped (ie: different studio, different gear).
