Op Ed: What Do “Mastered for iTunes” and “Sound Check” Do To Music Listening?

What do you guys think about soundcheck? Is it the holy grail of the loudness war, or ruining music?

The author seems pretty confused.

Regarding Sound Check specifically: it's a great first step but there are more sophisticated levelers.

I can't see how anyone who understands how it works could argue that it's ruining music. If anything, it's saving us from ourselves by putting sound quality before loudness.

You'd think apple would turn it on by default if it makes life easier.

The problem is that it does not work across an entire album. The Mastered for iTunes literature says it does, so maybe it's in the works. At least I can't find that option on my system.
