Four track tape

Someone asked me about restoring a 4 track master tape. Didn't know there was such a thing. Are there tape machines around in studios today that could play a four track tape?

I keep a few oddball decks around for that sort of thing. Do you know the tape size, speed, use of noise reduction, type of machine it was recorded on (if known - some of the pro-sumer decks used a variant of the standard NAB/IEC emphasis curve)?

You should have no problem finding someone with a compatible deck.

Not standard mastering equipment, but i have a 4 track 1/4" open reel deck.
It's a Dokorder 8140 which runs at 9,5 and 19 cm/sec.

There's still a Dokorder alive and running out in the world? I had the mis-fortune of using a 7140 in the 70's and have never forgotten the pain. The 7140 was almost entirely made of plastic and conveniently came factory delivered running about 6% off speed.
Hopefully the 8140 is several steps up from the old 7140.

I have an AMPEX AG-440C with multiple head blocks, including 1/2" 4-track. It was quite standard at one time. My machine is in great shape and will run at 7.5 In/S, 15 and 30. It'll do IEC or NAB (no AMPEX Master curve though, but that was pretty rare) with or without Dolby. One thing you have to watch if it's acetate tape, is that it may have become brittle, which takes some special treatment.

Maybe i should have said: it's running somewhere between 9,5 and 19 cm/sec haha, no just kidding.
This one performs steady and handles smoothly. It's really heavy and the important parts are metal.
Not Studer like built but handy to have around for those once in a few years occasions.
