Headphone Mixes

Gentlemen,

I do appreciate this is a Mastering forum. The reason I am asking here is because i understand that ME's have a keen interest in ensuring the monitoring chain is room response is as flat as is feasible.

My current environment is temp project studio but the room is a little to wild to trust for mixing duties. As this is a temp situation i have no intention on resolving those room issues with treatement. This is something i am currently building out in the new space available in a couple months.

As such i still need a solution to compltee these rough mixes. I am currently using the DT 880's and love them.

Would an independent AMP ensure the response is better /more accurate or is the difference negligible? I just want to ensure I am hearing as close to flat.

budget is approx 1k GBP. Only need a single stereo out to drive one set of headphones. Improved conversion is always appreciated as am using an RME FF800.

Any suggestions?

You could easily pick up a Benchmark DAC1 for quite a lot less than your budget. Great digital-analogue conversion and a great headphone amp. The USB version will be under your budget as well if you buy used.

You can probably do more with some simple room treatment than you'd think, but I won't go on about it as you mentioned that is not what you are looking for.

Thank you, I do have some basic treatment - I have some bass trapping in the obvious problem areas but it's not enough treatement to provide me with the confidence required.

-- To your comment - Yes the Benchmark looks fab! I suppose my lack of technical understanding..

1) Do you think the difference justifies the spend? AMP vs better set of HPones..

2) If so then where is that value realised? Is it in the conversion or the level of distortion, transient response etc..

-----

Currently the DT880's are a kind of Open/close design. Perhaps i should look for a top end pair of open backs? Or perhaps i should look at both amp and headset?

This is the current dilemma.

Thanks in advance.

What you currently have sounds fine to me, especially if you already know those cans.

Save your money for when you go into your new place, chasing relatively minor improvements for the sake of a couple of months seems like a bit of a waste if your new studio is the goal.
