It seems its somewhat implied around the forums that Tyler is a good substitute for Dunlavy. I'm a bit worried about parts accessibility for Dunlavy and would rather explore a product from an active company (and hear great things about Tyler and his customer service).

Have any of you long time Dunlavy users compared the two (not necessarily in a direct A/B)?

Thinking about maybe the D2's or MM5's, thanks.

Woohoo! Congrats man! You go with D1's? You're going to be a happy camper.

Nice! My D1's are black oak too. It's a great veneer choice, especially when you get up close, you can see the wood grain and all. Really beautiful.

Never heard the Barefoots but paired with the right amp I know you'll love the D1's.

+1

That's the three of us now with the black oak. I'm in love with these speakers. If they weren't so heavy, I'd carry them into bed at night.

Four. Adam at Telegraph Mastering in Portland has black oak D1's too.

You're still sleeping in your bed since getting your D1's Twerk? I've forgone the whole bed thing and just lay down next to my D1's subtly embracing them until it's time to awake and play music through them again. Can't fall asleep any other way...

Lipinski speakers are also good alternatives for Dunlavy or Duntech fans....

I could never work with Dunlavys (SC-IVa's). Nor the SC-IV's for that matter (as exciting as they are to listen to when there's a good movie going through them).

And nothing against those who like 'em either of course -- I could just never "connect" to them for some reason. Maybe I just never had enough time to really learn them...

But the Tylers... Even though I had to break them in (which was a bit of a chore actually), they just seemed like "old friends" very quickly.

How are the highs on the Tylers compared to the Lipinskis (I've heard Lipinskis)?

Adjustable. Mine came stock with a 1ohm resistor on the tweeter and at first they seemed too bright, but after a couple of weeks to adjust from my old speakers, they sounded perfect. The top end is very smooth, crystal clear, and revealing. I'm finding I can hear distortion and glitches without having to resort to my Sennheiser's. They're also pretty easy to get positioned.

Thanks, and you feel you've taken a significant step forward now?

The Tyler marque looks very good value for money, maybe even good enough for me to come to the States and hear some in the absence AFAICS of a Europe/UK distributor.

New monitors aren't top priority here at the moment, but when they are...

first @ Nathan: sorry we took over your thread with D1 purchase talk.
I have had a few people tell me SCIVA replacements drivers and such can be found and matched

@ Mark: going to use this trio of amps from 801. Modified 550w Transnova sounded best with the B&W. Have this Adcom+Mark Levinson thing

i get my decade 1 three weks ago & they played in now.
its' quiet important witch amp you use.
with a cheap class d onkyo amp i got a bright sound without deepness.
on a quad 606 i have a really alive sound, nice bottom, but not very tight and with quiet colored high mids and highs.
a friend brought me a abacus 60-120, a very inconspicous looking german amp, with let the decade 1 sound much more balanced and give her a really tight bass.
i'm still have some little peaks at 1.4k, 2.77k 4.41k 6.37k & 8.89k.
the psi 215 who stand next to the tyler sound less colored in this range , so i think it's not a problem of the room (i also tried many positions).
it's sound also sometime a bit "phasey" in the presents aera, but my room is really nice treated, 0.3 sec reverb time, no modes longer than 0.5 sec, no hearable comb filter effects from the table or the walls in a huge sweet spot.
most people didn't realize this phasey aspect and the frequenzy peaks & to hear them obvious you need to switch from the psi.
do someone have the same experience? is mabye a tweeter not ok?
on the other side the stereo picture, the room resolution and the bassresponse are amazing.

edit:
i changed one of the tweeters, the "phasey"-problem is solved now!

Without a doubt, a significant upgrade for our studio. In the 15 years I've been mastering, never have revisions been so few.

Ha - You still have few.

I kid... I kid... True though -- Revisions are few and far between. And almost always something very subjective...

As far as I know, Alan Silverman and Bob Katz are very happy with the Revel Ultima range (Bob went from Lipinskis to the Gem2, Alan went from the Lipinskis to the Studio2)

I've heard Alan's, as well as a pair they had up at Sterling, I think in Dave's room. I was duly impressed. Absolutely something to have on the list of monitors to audition if you're in the market for new mains.

A good sign.

Philosophical digression alert

Mind you, it's a tribute to your development as a mastering engineer and listener too: could you have achieved as much with the Tylers five or ten years ago as you do today? My guess would be no.

I've been mastering for a similar period, and there's no doubt in my mind that I've never been more able to get the best out of equipment and do more with less than I am now - it's a good feeling, one I suspect only comes with putting the hours in. The audio processing and acoustical knowledge available today is a marvel, but being an ME still ultimately comes down to ability, experience and listening skills.

I wholeheartedly agree. Still, there is an apparent difference in the number and type of revision requests when comparing only the most recent year of work. Since switching over to the D1's, it's rare I get a request for anything more than just a small level tweak. Perhaps these D1's just play better with this room.

Sounds like a great marriage of technical resource and ability - may they be very happy together for years to come :-)
