Beatport wave images and volume level comparison...

Lately I've been noticing that quite a few tracks on Beatport have quite loud overall volume level... but if u look at the wave image u can see that there is quite a bit of head room in the file.. for example if u compare this:

jozif - Lowlight (Jozif's Brightlight Mix ) [Coincidence Records] :: Beatport

to this:

Duckhunter - Kush (Original Mix) [Unt Records] :: Beatport

u can see that first track has much more headroom but they both sound on the same level loudness wise...

Is this just Beatport wave image is incorrect or is it different way of mastering in case of first track?

What they probably display is the track before the limiter that they use.

Well Beatport is just a store.. They sell what they get.. They don't do any post processing I don't think.. But they do generate the wave image themseves... So u actualy see the image generated for the file they received from the label... Any thoughts?

To my hears, "Duckhunter - Kush" is clearly louder than "jozif - Lowlight" .....

the wave display seems accurate.....

It all comes down to frequency content and transient shape as a factor in perceived loudness just as important as peak and average values. i.e. - a sharp percussive with lots of upper-mids in say the 3kHz zone will be perceived louder than a slowly rising 300Hz tone even if the meters read those two sounds as the same.

Best regards,

I would not really trust those web-page wave image services. Download the song into Ableton Live, Logic or something else and check out the waveforms.

Similar results to be had from Soundcloud waveform view as well... I think it just tweaked and scaled differently (more focussed on top few dB), quite possibly with some kind of freq weighting?
I think they do this to make a few million bricks easier to tell apart and see where the breakdowns are for 'needle' dropping.

This is probably it. Without any axis indicators it's not clear where "loud" really is on the pictures. Sort of like a VU meter focuses in on a range of about 9dB, they might warp the graph to stretch out whatever transients are left.
