New speakers... possibly.

Howdy folks,

It seems that Jorge, the studio owner, is itching to try out some new speakers in the room.

Right now we have Dunlavy SC-IV's (non-A's) driven by a Bedini 803 Class-A amp and we both seem to be wanting to hear a more authoritative low end (20-60 Hz or so).

Possible candidates he's looking at are Tyler D1's (similar design to the Dunlavys) or maybe Revels (Ultima or Salon?). Anyone have any idea how the lowest end of either if these compare to the older Dunlavys?

I know it's tough to compare speakers not knowing anything else about the room but I thought I'd toss it out there to see what I could find out.

Thanks.

Have you thought about adding stereo subs? I have a set of Velodyne DD12's with my Duntech Marquis and they work a treat. The other advantage is that you can localise the subs wherever they work best in the room. It's harder to do that with full range speakers as the best position for the low end could also be a compromise for other aspects i.e. imaging, mids, highs.

interesting point,
I always thought that a pair of full range monitors (25Hz-25kHz fro example) is better then any setup with subs

The sub question is always a tricky one in my opinion, as a lot of the sub integration comes from the tuning/setup. If you are diligent enough to experiment and learn the room with the subs and tweak to taste over a long period of time, then you will eventually find a great system that meets your needs. However if the room has issues then sub integration can be tricky and can create more problems than needed.

I have recently changed monitors and the change has had to be gradual. I have had both the old and new speakers set up in order to learn the new ones. I have also informed all of my regular clients/engineers that I am in this transition, but so far all of the feedback has been great but I am really open to their input.

Good luck with the search.
