DAW bit depth setting?

I asked this question over on the "computers" forum but I don't think they are getting the point.

Most DAWs and ITB mastering tools these days process the audio internally as 32 or 64 floating point format. That being the case, what is the function of the "Project Bit Depth" setting in these tools?

For example, if I have a 24 bit project in Cubase and I import a 16 bit file it asks if I want to "convert to the project bit depth". Why does it ask to convert to 24 bit if it's all processed as 32 float?

If you stay 64-bit all the way through, and there will be processing involved, then internal (daw) unshaped dithering won't be necessary. If there is no processing involved, simply import at whatever original bit depth of the file and save some disc space.

I would not up-convert, even bit depth.

In the DAW, i have it set to process audio at a floating point of 32bit. No matter if the audio file is 16bit or 24bit. 64bit float is overkill in my opinion.
