Or to put it another way, you won't need subs. The MM5s say they go to 28 hz, but if I play a 24 hz tone through them its plenty scary.

replying to sub to this thread.. but also wondering how they'd compare to either the barefoot mm27 or focal sm9... which are monitors i'm considering going with.

i prefer stand-mounted monitors over floor standing towers.. these MM5 seem to be sort of in between.. but they also cost half of what the barefoot and focals do.

Nobody asked, but I'm using a Jim Williams modified Adcom GFA 555 with the MM5s. PLENTY of power. Sounds great. They don't need much to drive them.

i change now from quad 606 to abacus 60-120c power edition

ABACUS electronics | 60-120C

this amp have a interesting technology who let my decade 10 sound much more neutral and tighter

Yes! You can follow my crazy journey in the ATC-Tyler comparison thread. In short, I LOVE mine and any issues I had/have are room/placement based. In short I didn't dig the tweeter at first, but now I love it. I think the MM5s are killer. I want to hear the D1s out of curiosity but am really totally happy with the MM5s.

Worth noting I'm still using the same power amp mentioned in my post above. I tried a pair of Hypex Ncore 400 mono blocks, and I still prefer the modded Adcom. Not as great front to back imaging but more clarity.

Been with the MM5's for 4 months now and what Thermos says here was totally key for me as well (as with most speakers I suppose). I fought with placement/treatment for the 1st month but once I found the right combination, firing off masters that translate well everywhere has never been easier for me. This is a great speaker and Ty is a true gentleman and great at making his customers happy, which also goes a very long way IMO.

Agreed, Ty is great to deal with and totally knows how to deal with audio related neurosis, which hopefully all mastering engineers suffer from. I love these things.

Hi Thermos!
Sorry to resurrect this old old conversation, but this thread convinced me to buy a pair of D110s from Tyler in January (such a cool guy to chat with). I absolutely love those speakers! They're like a magnifying glass for tracks! Such a great choice!!

I'm curious what issues you dealt with regarding placement of your MM5s and the freq response (Tyler said the MM5s are the same as the D110s, but the D110s are floor-standing). I have been obsessing over the acoustics and monitoring in my studio: measuring, moving, treating, measuring, moving, treating, and-on-and-on-and-on-and-on...

I have two other sets of cheaper reference monitors for mixing that are measuring flat as can be, but the D110s have a dip around 200hz that I can't seem to shake. I have them on concrete blocks that raise them up to "tweeter = ear-level", but I'm curious if I should take them off the blocks or continue to move them around. I think I've tried almost everything at this point and I have OC703 everywhere... Not to mention those bad-boys are heavy and the room is full of gear which makes it difficult to move things around...

Any advice or lessons learned you could pass on?

Interesting. I still have a small dip at 165, but now it's so small it doesn't seem to matter. I ruled out the speakers being the cause by just moving them much closer together. The dip then went down to about 120 and 165 was fine. Thus I know its where I am in the room and not the speakers. I also have mine on blocks and the tweeter just a little higher than ear height. Tilted back just a bit as well as recommended by John Scrip.
The final thing that seemed to flatten things in my room was placing 1 last trap where I didn't think it would be needed. If I were you I'd shoot whatever freq is nulling the most at listening position and walk around the room until you find where it peaks. Seems like you might have done that already though...
