RIP Al Grundy

Sad news for all audio engineers today - Al Grundy, easily the most knowledgeable man in North America on record cutting systems and the Neumann lathes in particular, and one of the main people responsible for keeping the professional vinyl record mastering systems in the USA running for the past 40 years - just passed away (from my understanding from complications from leukemia). He was 85. A true gentleman and a wealth of information - he will be missed!!!

Best regards,
Steve Berson

Oh dear, that is a big loss for lots of reasons. Al was a very smart guy and is taking a lot of knowledge with him.

Oh wow. Terrible news for the vinyl community, but worse for his family. I hope they're doing alright.

I got to know Al pretty well during my days at The Hit Factory and
Classic Sound. He was never in a rush to get to work. When he came
to the studio I had to be prepared to chit chat for a least an hour before he would look at anything.
He was an affable guy who always had a good story to tell. He (almost) always got me up and running again.
Rest In Peace old audio dog.

I heard about Al's passing at the AES NY Section picnic last weekend. Floored me.

I work with Kurt Hulit, who worked very closely with Al for years and always had some great Al stories... I'd imagine it's gotta be tough for him.

RIP to a true master of the profession.

There will be a gathering next week at someplace to be determined, in Manhattan. It is for anyone who wants to come. Details when I have them.
