I had to show it here as well.
OK, it's done and it sounds GREAT and is deadquiet.
It's done with stepped swithes, all done by hand. Quit a lot of work but totally worth it.
The boards are both hanging on the sides so that i can work on it from the bottom and top without removing the boards.
Panel was done by Schaeffer. Not really cheap but i wanted it in blue which turned out even better then i expected.
I'm really happy with how it turned out. Now it's time to use it in practice. 8)
OK.. some pics: |

Who's building Barry Porter NetEQ's for $1,180?
Please let me know so I can buy one.

Very nice. There is a lot of work in those stepped pots! How many days did it take to build?

Great work......... | The PCB layout is Porter's original for which gerbers were circulating for years. I wanted to build one for myself and the Frank Lacy boards were no longer available so I pestered a well known board maker called Gustav over on GroupDIY to do a run. It was risky because the board was untested but AFAIK Dagoose is the first person to complete one and everything seems to work well.
My boards are still in their vacuum pack I'm sorry to say....way too busy.

Wow, that didn't take long, the PMs are coming in already. A few points -
- I don't sell these board, they are available from Gustav on the White Market over at GroupDIY. You may need to sign up to see this link PCBS: (NetEQ, Ez760, GssL, G9, 500 series projects, PeQ, La4, G7 etc.). 3 for 2.
- This is not a beginners project so if you haven't built some gear before it's not a good starter project. There is no PSU circuit included so you'll need to know what you're doing in that department too.
- Gustav provides no support for this project and the boards are sold as is, they may contain flaws, there is no guarantee and no money back. This was all made very clear when Gustav made the boards, Porter's gerber files were used as is and unchecked.

Looks great, you are a skilled builder. Something so nice about stepped switches. For us MEs it's like opening a box of your favourite sweets as a kid... 'look at all the colours'.
Ninja selection of facia, knobs, massive passive style panel lights and silkscreen. |

Congrats on the finished build, looking stellar! What are the frequency points? none of the pictures show the front panel clear enough to see them.
Also are the high & low bands switchable between shelf & bell? More to the point how do you find it compares sonically to your Sontec 250 clone? do you have a favourite?

wow! thanks for all the nice comments I Didn't expect to get so much love for the machine the way i did it. I hope Barry Porter is proud and smiling at me.
OK, some reactions/info.
Frontpanel is done on 4mm thick adonized aluminium, engraved by Schaeffer. (over 200 euro for those wanting to know)
Knobs are from musikding.de
It has 0.5db per step up and down, max boost and cut is 5.5db which i think is enough but it's easy to set it, i think + and - 12db if you want to.
It has both low and hi-shelf switches (the blue pushbuttons near the q of low and hi-band) so that it can be used as peak and shelf on the hi and low band.
The boards are indeed done by gustav from the original gerbers from Barry Porter.
There is a BOM circuling around but it's not correct and i didn't make a BOM myself so i'm afraid i can't help with that.
Compared to my sontec first impression is that the netEQ is more transparant but i just have it done and so i'm still have to really find out what it does in practice. So far i love it!
Orders? hmm..

I did check the clock once when i was doing one of the latest switches for freq selection (2 decks) It took me 1 hour and 15 minutes to finish that switch and that was after having a routine because i did a lot already.
Wiring, testing, finetuning the swithes etc took a lot of time as well.

I get quite a lot of PM's about this EQ and mostly about the frontpanel.
I had it done at Schaeffer and was over 200 euro and did the design myself which took quite some time and that is why right now i won't be giving it away.
Peter @ http://www.grandmasteraudio.com could maybe help you out. He designed and engraved my sontec clone panel ( Da Goose Music - Mastering and Sound Engineering - Ultimate Eq) and he's a great guy to deal with!

Here for the freq. points. Another design inspired by Barry Porter and the Greg Reierson own Porter/Lacy.
As before... to much work to give away.
Feel free to be inspired.
Best

Jeffrey!
Stellar work!
Hey, I know what you mean about the panels... Those are a lot more work than people realize... Especially the scale markings.
Keep up the good work,
Roger

it is a nice, solid work.
I wish I would have the skill and patience to make it myself
Would you describe it more as a GML-ish or Sontec-ish behaviour?
What about the phase-shift transient softening?

I've got Joe Malone from JLM Audio building a Barry Porter mastering EQ for me at the moment. It's based on the Frank Lacy PCB's and will have 4 peak/dip bands and 2 hi/lo shelf bands per channel. 72 frequency choices which I've carefully selected to match musical notes. 3RU chassis with elma knobs and custom black faceplate which may look a little 'Sontec'ish'... I like black rack gear with big knobs.
There will be some other mods under the hood as well which I'm keeping under wraps. I'll start a new thread once I have the prototype sitting in front of me.
Will hopefully be ready in time for the grand opening of the new Northward mastering room.
