Gentle Shelving EQ: Clariphonic useful for mastering? Also AEA RPQ?

I'm looking for a shelving Eq to put in the mastering chain. Mostly just something to add a little air after a hardware compressor. I've used the Clariphonic lots but only for tracking. Has anyone compared this to the BAX and the Mini Massive for mastering?

I was also looking at the AEA RPQ-500 preamps for tracking grand piano and I noticed they have a line input and a high shelf and curve shaping. Has anyone tried those for mastering?

Fair enough. I've definitely read every thread on this site about the Bax and the Mini Massive, neither of which I've used but seem to be pretty popular for this purpose. I guess more specific questions would be:

- Do people find the clariphonic useful for mastering? Or are the Bax / MM safer choices?

- Has anyone tried the AEA rpq-500 as a simple high shelf?

Yes, the Clariphonic definitely has a use in mastering, but as you know its shelving EQ relates to highs and to some extent mids. The Bax has a low shelf and HP filter as well, so is arguably more a flexible tool. That said, the Clariphonic is quite special, so there may well be room for both in your arsenal.

Ha ha, both it is then! Thanks for the info, I just picked up a Clariphonic from the classifieds.

Question for Chris Bauer... Where did you get your studio desk? Is it custom made? Looks very nice! Website is nice too! ...

Thanks for the compliment. I built the desk myself, but I am rapidly running out of space. So it won't be long before I will need to either build or buy bigger one. The website is also my own creation, though based on a WordPress theme. Those are pretty much my two hobbies ... wood work and web design!
