any alternative to Dangerous Music Liaison?

being planning to design mastering insert/switchbox, and found Dangerous Music Liaison,
well it's beauty and it does what I need, but....
it's hell of expensive box if you consider it's just few switches inside,
I know what you gonna say ...it's Dangerous Music so it has to be expensive,
ok, I can't afford it, if I could I would spend 2500$ anyway on other analog gear,
so question is does anything less expensive exist at all,
or maybe you could build similar thing yourself,
I was also thinking about eventually adding also LPF/HPF modules for compressor or saturation boxes...
any thoughts ??

TK Audio makes the "Blender" Mini Mastering Console. It's about half the price of the Dangerous and it seems to have less than half the functions.

I've been looking for in this area for a while, and the Dangerous Liaison seems to be the best bang for buck out there when you look at units like the Manley Backbone that is over twice the price of the Dangerous

cheers, it looks interesting, but as you said, does not have even half of the function of dangerous...
hmmm, 2 - options,
1. diy (first design a thing - maybe it's even impossible or not worthy)
options - save monies and get dangerous

thanks for info

My Recordings/Credits

I think I remember hearing someone say they are working on something kind of like this. My guess is if so, its probably pretty close to ready because it was a while ago I was told about it. I was interested in something similar so I just kind of decided to wait around and see.

We're hoping by AES this fall. It will be a monitor controller and an 8 channel analog insert router with MS, channel reverse and a few things I haven't seen on other routers. The monitor section is done. I've been using a prototype for over a year. The router is in progress...

More soon.

I already have a monitor controller (dangerous music D-box), which I also use for extra 8 channels summing with dangerous 2-box, but 8 channels router sounds better than 6 channels with the Dangerous Liason. Do you have any idea who is making this router and what the price range might be?

Scott Liebers and myself with help from Dan Kennedy are making the monitor controller and router. The monitor and router sections as individual products will probably be ready next year.

sounds good! 6 channels seems not enough for all my mastering tools... 8 channels must be just fine, specially with same flexibility and relay based building as the dangerous... is there anything you can say about this yet?

The router is an all passive design with relay switching unless either the MS or the parallel function is engaged.

There's nothing magical about routers as long as they are implemented well. With all of the inserts bypassed it's a handful of relays in series. I can't measure any added noise or signal loss on my prototype.

No presets. Price TBD. MUCH less than a BackBone with 90% of its functionality.

quick update,
I am getting TK AUDIO blender from Thomas,
with a little modification
I will drop more info when it's done and in my hands,
I think that blender got much better routing then dangerous after some thoughts,
sure 2 inserts is not enough, but the way you can manipulate and blend them is genius
and with my set up insert 1 would be compressor, insert 2 culture vulture,
another comp after blender (has it's own mix dry/wet control) and ted's fletcher p9 eq at the end,
I'll keep you updated,
big thanks to Thomas from TK AUDIO for first class support!

SPL Masterbay or SSL X Patch would be alternatives.

I have a MixDream and Dangerous Master. I'm looking at adding an X Patch. Any tips on how you would use the X Patch with my system to get the most flexibility with it?

Thanks!

Why not simply call Crispin and have him put together exactly what you need. All his kit is modular, flexible and expandable. If you don't need a monitor controller and all the other bells and whistles, but just an insert box/router, I'm sure he could set you up with something custom tailored to your studio setup, and at a reasonable price. Then later if you change/upgrade/expand, the system will grow with you.

The stuff on the website is just a sampling of what they offer, much of his work is custom, all built with the same modular bits.

Just a thought from a very happy customer.

Welcome to Crookwood

Cheers,
Thor

The Blender is indeed impressive, been using mine for a few months and I can't believe I ever worked without it. It's really versatile even though it only has 2inserts/3channels, but I guess you have to work with it to fully understand its potential.

I have the Maselec stuff on insert 1, the elysia and the TK Audio BC1 on insert 2, and then I have the Pullet on the monitor output and the main output going directly to the Prism. I'm very happy with this setup, all thanks to the Blender.

Ah, we've been buried in real work... The monitor section is ready. The router is on the drawing board. I wanted to have it ready for AES but it ain't gonna happen this year.

btw,
if I remember correctly, Bruno P. the famous hypex amp designer,
promised on dyi forum to deliver his own design for amp attenuator,
best suited for hypex amp,
so maybe it's worth to check it out....

Darn! I'm just about to be in the market for such a tool. I suppose I'll let John sway me towards Crookwood.

Thanks for the update.

For sale
The Crookwood has 8 analog input sources switchable from the controller & 7 analog inserts that can be position & stereo locked or dual mono & not position locked. I had Crispin design this for the ultimate m/s flexibility while having the dangerous S&M in the first 4 inserts.
The unit comes with one igloo rack brain & one igloo rack worker, remote controller, 3 xlr bays, 2 d sub breakout cables & a few other connecting cables.
Originally paid $4000 Yours for $1900.
