Thread Starter | Is there a way to master a CD to make it sound like a vinyle record ?
hi ! I'm very fond of the vinyle sound and I'd like to make my music sound like it is recorded on a vinyle. What are the mastering tricks to do that please ? |

mix in some vinyl-crackle :-) ha-ha .... I think it's a choice of compressor and EQ ... but CD is CD and Vinyl is Vinyl .... The tubetech smc-2b gives a lot of control ... mayby that's the one ... greetings Wim - www.inlinemastering.com | |

Sorry if this sounds too obvious, but how about getting a dub-plate cut, then re-record it with a nice turntable/pre/AD converter?.....i expect that might sound a bit like vinyl. Shouldn't cost more then a couple of hundred squid i expect. I'm sure Paul Gold will sort you out: http://www.vinylmastering.net/biography.html

The cheap & quick & dirty way is Izotope's freeware Vinyl plugin - http://www.izotope.com/products/audio/vinyl/ I actually used this on a couple tracks recently for one client that wanted to fake that their tracks had been transferred off of old 78s - they really loved the end results. Watch out though with this one as it can make the mids pretty peaky if you apply it's filters (labelled with a year date) - I usually just tame this back down with some multiband compression if necessary. Best regards, Steve Berson |

I have been known to record something to acetate and play it back. Sometimes it is the right trick. But just like the magic of analog tape it is overated. It's the last little bit. After all it's a recording medium just like analog tape or PCM digital. The design goal is a perfect representation of the original waveform. Rarely acheived. You would be well served trying to get the sound you want by other means. By the time you send it off it should sound as close to "right" as you can get it. High frequency limiting might be a good trick. Try a de esser.
