DRM ?

Hello: What DRM options are out there now when distributing wavs and mp3s via the internet?

WAVs and MP3s are DRM-free formats. Do you mean secure ways to transfer files to clients?

Yes exactly googling and looking at different options. Is there any way to deliver a wav or mp3s without worrying they will wind up all over the world?

FTP is a 'secure' way to deliver files on the net as the up- and downloader both need a login/pass to access the files.

I presume that when you'll send files to someone else you can assume that they will not spread them. If you are not sure about this you should or work with somebody else or have a good conversation with them. You can use file metadata or even the file header to enclose unique file identifiers so you can trace the leak when a file pop's up on the net where it should not be... A file to contributor X has a tag 476576578 and the same file to contributor Y has the tag 476576579. Use all other tags for metadata in the file so the use of the metadata is clear to everyone that has access to the file. You'll have to write down this tags if you want to keep track of them, that seems obvious, but thats extra work...

If it is really important and confidential (as with forensic jobs etc.) we do not use the net at all but UPS or even express couriers.

Kind regards from Belgium

Pedro

There is no way. If the recipient wants to spread it, he can and will. Even if you send a AAC with DRM he´ll still be able to burn to audio-cd and re-rip to get rid of the DRM.

The only chance is to make the recipient liable via watermarking and a signed NDA which might keep him from spreading the data.

There are watermarking systems that survive transcoding pitch-shifting and even re-recording throughout a mic etc.:

Probably expensive to license so probably only worth investing for large corporations but I heard several audio book MFG use it already

I use www.Wetransfer.com for all sorts of media exchanges with clients. Never had any issues. Only the person who's email you provide will have the right link to download the material...

This is pretty much your answer.

If you recipient is secure and you are only worried about your files getting caught in transit. You can always double wrap them in encrypted archives with a high bit cypher and transfer the two different keys through two different methods.

Or you could have encrypted virtual disks that can only be read in the presence of a smart key-card.

You can spend a lot of money to lock down stuff and it still will not really make it any safer except from point A-B. Once it is at either end, it is pretty much FFA.

At some point though your media is going to be in a format for mass distribution and naked and the only thing you can do is trust the people who handle it or track who caused the damage afterwards.
