| Gear maniac | EQ for mix with hollow mids?
Hello Mastering Forum slutz, ![]() Had a quick question. I'm happy with my mixes and pretty happy with my DIY mastering, but my masters seem to have a what I would describe as hollow mid-range. I understand every mix is different, but around what frequency range would be good to boost to solve this problem? Also what would be a good Q range? Here is one of my mixes (listen in 720p): -EQ |

If your mixes sound "hollow" (perhaps a better word would be scooped) in the midrange, why not just boost the midrange? I'm on a laptop right now, so unfortunately I can't listen to the sample you provided. Generally wider Q's sound better when boosting, as they tend to minimize unnatural resonance and ringing that can often occur when boosting with a narrower Q. Jason |

Actually for this musical style your frequency spectrum sounds quite good. Nice, clean, and open, and it leaves a nice space for the vocal to sit. If you want to sound more like a major label you might try a bit of high shelf at 5 or 6K. This will make the mix sound a bit more forward, and will help the percieved loudness. My favorite eq for midrange is manley's Massive passive, but i don't think you need one here. Nice work!

Maybe your monitoring is what's shy in the mids. Sounds like the mids are just fine to me.

Thanks guys. I initially was very happy with the sound I achieved on this but I guess I started second guessing myself. I really appreciate it.

| That's one of the primary reasons even very good engineers hire mastering studios... to get a new, objective opinion.

ya, I agree, mids sound good. If anything, work on the highs, maybe a 10k shelf. But very minimal.
