Beautiful desk Chris, gives me some ideas for the one I want to build!
What did you use to mount the Hilo?

Thanks for the quick reply, Chris.
Here I have the back opened but it faces the floor. So, I had to put a micro fan to help the ventilation.
At this very moment I have the splitter set at 22C and a thermometer close to my main LCD reading 25C!!!
My desk is pretty big, trying to downsize equipment but it takes time ( 80% mastering, 20% production yet).

To mount the Hilo, I used a 2U rack track, drilled holes into it and mounted the unit using the screw holes of rubber feet. I filled the gaps either side with a 2U rack plate which I cut into two small pieces. It was quite straight forward to do and looks quite neat.

view on the room ... still proud building it all by myself ... & with the help of all my clients for sure ..
working shot a few days ago, finally got the monitor on the console in a decent way, I can walk around on both side , and pull the monitor over if editing etc. The desk is moved after 4 years just about 0.8 meter more close to the speakers, giving some more space behind the console and just found myself a bit better in the right spot for the low_end. Still 3,4 meters behind the desk to the back_wall, the room is 7 meters from the back to the bass traps around the speakers. Behind the basstraps is still about 1 meter extra air , still want to use that some more for trapping .. hope to do some changes next year again ... and finetune the room some more to acoustic taste .. still feel very lucky with a room like this at my house .. Biggest change to come is putting up 40m2 on solars panels on top of the roof spring 2013 ... can't wait for that & the fairmans never let me down, loving the units some much , great work from Werner !!!! |

So, if I buy a UAD mastering plug for my Apollo, it should bring me very close to all this gear, right?
;-)
These are beautifully appointed rooms, and are truly inspiring. Good luck, and thanks guys.

Some time ago I was also hoping that could be a viable solution. However, one small spent fortune later, I can see (and hear) why virtually all mastering engineers use outboard gear as part of their signal processing. The gain in sound quality over plug-ins may be subtle and is certainly not in proportion to the additional cost, but it can make the difference between very good and great.
Everybody wants to sound great!

yep, i'm of the "everything matters" school of philosophy, and that gear makes a serious difference. I've been out of the music business loop for a long time and only recently began feeling it out again. I'm working on some song demos, and hoped they would turn out to be good enough for a new album. I was in the Salvation Army looking at records,
(I'm about to buy a turntable), and a guy next to me handed me a Lyle Lovett CD and said "this is great". I took it as a sign, forked over two bucks and put it on late that evening. It was a sad reminder of how much fooling myself I've been doing lately. The warmth, the black background with the vocal floating in mid-air, not a trace of harshness or over-compression, yet full of detail, the mix, the soundstage, the tonal balance, all just absolutely beautiful and enough to remind me why I swore off recording at home twenty years ago.
and then, there's the mastering... ugghh

Besides looking great, i found out that a wooden floor solved my static discharge problem (using rolling office chairs) for good. |

Attachment 318235 | I have some PSI A25 speakers coming over here in the New Year for review - looking forward to it. They're apparently doing some small crossover and amp tweaks, be interesting to see what those are.

I'm sure you'll like them.
These tweaks you mention, are those on new models or are you speaking of a custom modification?
Btw, i've picked my office chairs and curtains in the back of my room the same beautiful purple-red color as the PSI's |

I looks like a wooden trough? Just wondering what it is used for? It looks like there are some holes in it. Thanks in advance!

Hi Thomas, it's just the lowered part of the floor, to make the first step down onto the stairs more easy. The floor was raised about 12cm, holes are led lights, just for fun ...
thnx all for the comment on the floor, it's the most cheap solid pine_wood B choice ( cheaper as fake) ... just colored with some "kesselse aarde".. kind of coal powder .. thinned with water , you just need 4 spoons of that to do the floor ... funny stuff .. we got it form a alternative paint_shop .. after that oil/wax from time to time .. smells like an old cathedral after that.
