Not to be a gear snob here - but I honestly haven't found a $2000 pair of monitors that sounds accurate enough and full range enough to be used for mastering. For a little bit I tried to use a pair of monitors that were highly esteemed by audiophile circles that only ran me $2900 used - but ultimately found them useless as the mids were simply not accurate enough, so in the end wasted time and money by trying to get away with using lower budget items instead of just going for a more expensive monitor with a proven track record - in this case the B&W N802's which I've been incredibly happy with.

Anyway -
You can find used B&W N802's on http://www.audiogon.com for usually around $5500.

Best regards,

Interesting stuff at the Audiogon site. Any opinions on the B&W 805S for a small room?

Try these: http://www.northcreekmusic.com/Pegasus/Pegasus.htm

The crossover they make can be found in many very high end monitors, as well as the components. I know that one very high end studio monitor company can vouch for these guys. I hate to sound cryptic, but many very high end loudspeaker/monitor companies use these guys kits. I have owned very nice monitors (do a search) and I now own one of this companies kits and they are every bit as good.

One mastering house I go to use these as near field http://www.orpheusaudio.com.au/?d=products&p=minotaur2 and the top of the line Duntechs - Sovereigns - as their mains.

The Duntechs are amazing speakers but the Orpheus don't get blown away by them - apart from the bottom end, of course.

I can't find a price but I'm pretty sure they come in well under $2000 US.

You might do it with Amphion Argon2's (http://www.soundstage.com/revequip/amphion_argon2.htm) with good amp and a sub. Their Xenon might be a better speaker (though the designer for some reason prefers the a2 + sub combination to xenon) but costs some $4k.

Nice to see these baby's finally getting the credit they deserve!!!

I've got em with the "flat" option and have been recomending them for a loooong time.

The "Thunder" sub is also very good

For something really amazing for the money, try a pair of the Pegasus with two of these MF's

http://www.vandersteen.com/pages/2Wqlit.html

alot of guy's like their Velodynes and bla bla bla, But for MUSIC these rule the roost. Deep, quick as hell, and EASY to integrate. Get two for stereo

Yea ...
I was thinking that Pegasus .... In a Column version ,
Incorporating the 12-Sub in it,
... like a 3 way design.!
like this one , but with the 12 inch Sub on the bottom...

Try The Vandersteens first!!!

I've had it both ways and there is NO comparison.

Do the reading on both sites as there are different ways to integrate/crossover the system.

I've got two Pegasus on stands and two vand'y subs crossed around 67Hz. the amp's and adjustability on the vandy subs make it really easy to tune properly.

I think you posted a pic of the ESKA.

Great for mixing, but for mastering, the Pegasus looks to be a better choice. I grilled George on this subject and he can't say enough about the Pegasus. I currently use the a similar config to the pic Rep posted.

With Subs incorporated in the box/inclosure, as a standing 3 way ...
Pegasus 3 way Column,
... Pegasus set-up on the Top 2 Speakers with the 12 or the 18 inch Subs on the bottom.

I'm using Marantz amp (SR4600 A/V amp) with argon2's but I'm not mastering with the setup (just checking mixes).

Rotel RB-1092 looks *VERY* interesting amp, it uses the same ICEPower Class-D technology used also on very highly valued ADAM monitors:

http://europe.rotel.com/products/specs/rb1092.htm
http://europe.rotel.com/products/specs/rb1091.htm
http://www.icepower.bang-olufsen.com...storeid=328227

Btw. The Marantz also has the Pre-Out sends so you could use it as 5.1 (7.1) decoder and D/A converter for the Rotel power amplifiers.

What's wrong with Genelec 8040's??? I know they aren't some brand that you never heard of, or very esoteric... But, both Bob Katz (a well known mastering engineer) and myself (a well known know-it-all ) think they are great and they are right around $2000.

There was a big thread on this at the begining of the month that you might be able to find...

That doesn't mean you have heard the 8040's... they don't sound like 1031's or anything you would think from Genelec.

OK Tony,

I`ll give the 8040s a try, you are right, I`ve heard them but not worked with them... But I doubdt that would be suitable for mastering, I don`t remember to be impressed with them...

I got a set of M-20's for nearfield use and am very content - Transients are clear and the stereo imaging is exellent. Wouldn't trade for any high-end amped HiFi speakers unless we´re running budgets at around 15k.
