Thread Starter | CD-Text, ISRC Codes, UPC/EAN and..........Scribe Numbers??
Hey everyone! Just recently we've had someone ask us to encode a "Scribe Number" into the disk during the mastering process. Of course, there are the basic things that can easily encoded, such as CD-Text, ISRC Codes, UPC/EAN Codes and PQ Subcodes. Honestly, I've never heard of a Scribe Number and believe it may something for the manufacturer to worry about (coming to this conclusion after flipping over and looking at the middle of the shiney side of a major release). After doing a few Google searches, I've found neither information about it, nor the technology behind the encoding of it. Is this prehistoric nomenclature, simply inexistent, or should I just find a new day job? Thanks!

The commonly understood meaning of the word "scribe" (also known as the "matrix") is the numbers and/or letters inscribed into the glass master that then gets pressed into the inner diameter of the mirror band (on the playing side just outside of the clear plastic inner hub) on replicated CD's. In general replicators will by default will scribe their own work order numbers (which gives a unique number to each master so that they can identify the job they are pressing) and sometimes the name of the plant - but they can usually easily modify this to read whatever the client desires. The way to deal with this request is to just notify the replicator that you wish a special scribe to be made - and provide the text of the way you wish the scribe to read in writing.
