DIY Neumann PEV or Studer 169 for mastering purposes

I want to build some DIY-Outboard which should make the start for my mastering chain. Since yet, I own an API 2500 and I want to add a nice sounding EQ.

Since this my first DIY-project (beyond soldering cables and doing some small repairments), it shouldn't be that difficult.

After some research I'm mostly interested in the Neumann PEV and the Studer 169. For some time later, my intention is to build one of Igor's Sontec 250 Clones.

So, my question is which one of those could be the better choice, regarding that I later want to add a Sontec? Can one of those EQs be useful at all for the beginning of my analogue mastering-chain?

Other suggestions are:
- NYD EQ (have to do more research on it)
- Neumann W492
- Trident CB9066
- Pultec EQP1A

The last two mentioned seem to me too colourful to start a chain with. Concerning comps: I'm interested in building a NTP 179-160 as well.

Thank you for your suggestions.

the output xformer of the PEVs are a big part of their sound unless you source an original one i don't think it's worth looking this side

for "diy" mastering equaliser a lot off ppl rave about the barry porter net eq

studer eqs are simple and musical, if you're into designing your own pcbs have a look at studer ftp (in audiosystems component) they have done some eq modules only, that would be prety interesting to clone as there're no esoteric component in them

Thanks for answering. After some research again, I decided to start with a studer-169- or a pultec-clone. I think it will be a good start for the beginning. Later on, I want to build a Net EQ, Davelizer, etc.

Why don't you just start on the igor sontec? That's what I'm thinking about doing. Where do you live? Want to group buy some parts?

I'm really interested in building the Sontec as well as the Net EQ, but since I'm having very few technic skills, I prefer to start with something easier.

Sontec and everything else will be projects for the future.

@Seditionary: I'm located in Berlin, Germany. So if you're from LA, I suppose it doesn't make sense for ordering together. If not, just send me a PM.
