Avalon SV-747......Anyone using it for Mix Buss Compression ?? Was wondering if anyone out there is using the Avalon SV-747 Compressor for Mix Buss Compression and/or Mastering and what your opinion of this piece is ?? I had one a a couple of years ago and had to sell it within a few months of getting it because of some financial situation (familiar story I'm sure)........broke my heart to have to sell it. From what I remember, it was a REALLY COOL Piece. I'm now in the market again for a mix bus compressor to ad some "Glue" to my mix.......not looking to smash my music.......just looking to give it that "Gel". I'm currently doing mostly Instrumental Ambient Electronic, SpaceMusic, Spacey New Age, and Enigma-ish kind of music. Any comments or impressions on this particular piece ??

i've had two productions mastered with one of these - i was unhappy with both results(two different studios). i think you could find something much better suited for similar $ IMO the 747 has it's place, but that place isn't in front of the mix.

| Gear maniac | I'd say it will work good for your type of music. I have it and I always feel that it's too slow on rock stuff, but on electronic music I really like it. And that graphic EQ will get you close to "that" bass, a good colour on the 2.5K band which will help vocals and snare samples, and a beautiful shimmer ;). |

I use it allways on the masterbus. tubechain in, minimal to no compression 2:1, set the input that the blue LED only flashes on peaks, graphic EQ on. for me it gives nice overtones and an extra glue, nice highend and serious lows

It is a favorite of Michael Brauer's for final mix EQ before mastering. I don't believe he uses the compressor at all... or if he does, very slightly. I think he uses it very subtly... I recall him saying something about liking the "air" the HF boost could impart. I only know this 'cause I became obsessed with Aimee Mann's "Lost In Space" and did a lot of research into the making of it. I do not know Michael Brauer personally, although I'm a fan. -- Chad

I have a number of albums that I did running it on the final mix bus and even thought my mastering guy dosn't always like it I agree that there is a glue factor and just with the tube button in and eq in but no real heavy comp happening or major eqing I like what it does to my pt mixes. I guess analog on the way in, analog on the way out and then let the mastering guy add the final push... infact I was listening to a mix I did on tv tonite, it only got 15 seconds of airtime but hey the Avalon is doin something for me there... well the artist did something too... my2

Usual suspects for glue might be the diferent Vari-Mu makers, and likewise the SSL variants. I too sold my 747 when I needed some cash, and I do miss it sometimes. To think of it as a compressor is to miss it's value I think. It adds some warmth and dimensionality while providing simple but usable EQ and a compressor that, while bad at being agressive, can be useful in a subtle way. Then again, if I could only have an SSL comp or a 747 for glue, I'd take the SSL...

How about the SSL 4000 plug-in by Waves........does that compressor measure up to the Hardware counterpart ?? It has to be loads better than the stock Digi compressor plugin I would think ?? | |

Heard some comparisons here at GS and I couldn't distinguish between the two (hardware vs. software). Now, in use they might yield very different results, but the initial listening seemed impressive. That said - I highly recommend reading up on all of the complaints about waves policies on upgrading etc. I personally would never buy another Waves product again. - Justin

I also have a VT 747 SP in my chain and like most of guys rather don't use the compressor, but the tube section to glue the mix. It works quite well together with the EQ. Eventually I sometimes use the side chain of the compressor to remove esses or harshness.
