That's a big task. Put yourself in that seat. Then ask, "what can I do to improve upon this?"
What can I do? Well first off I would get those drums and vocals panned center. I love the beatles, and I don't think that they have been given the respect they deserve with the sound quality of the CDs. I am all for remasters, and I just hope I can trust the mastering people to do a good job.

Ahh. I didn't even know that. Sad. But yes. Mojo magazine has an issue out talking about the remasters being here in 09. This time it looks for real.

Hey guys, check out Purple Chick

They are an independent company that remaster all the Beatles albums.

They take prestine vinyls of the albums and convert them to digital.

I am not a mastering wiz like you guys, so I do not know the positive/negative ramifications of this process, but they do sound better to me.

Not only that, they release them in stereo and mono and with all the sessions, outtakes, demos, jams and takes of every song that is available. Sometimes they will even throw a few amazing outfakes on there.

They are available online via torrent, rapidshare/megaupload, etc. Most copies are in flac.

I own several of their re-issues, and they take it seriously. My MFSL 'OMR' version of Queen's 'News of the World', is one of my most treasured CD's, from a sonic perspective.

Although it'll never happen, one can always wish...

Even if they just re-transfered them without doing anything it would be a huge improvement in resolution. I suspect the present cd's sound bad due to the converters used at the time of these transfers. Nothing compared to the original LP's - and I'm not even talking about the audiophile pressings that were popular. Ever noticed that ''Help!'' and ''Rubber Soul'' sound relatively better than the rest? From a Canadian perspective, these two were ''Made In Japan''. Go figure why only those two...

Being my first post, I want to take a moment to offer up props to all you guys who keep the dream alive. Many thanks for your posts.

Regarding the Beatles "remastering" for download, I sort of liken it to making your product work at Walmart, fitting it in between the small shelf spaces they allocate for you. The very notion is something that wise men like us need not concern outselves with if we are talking about the sonic integrity of the original recordings etc blah blah blah.

Now if you are involved int he project, then ***** yourself out becausde whatever you do, you will NEVER play in the arena reserved for the handling of the original masters or the restoration of their integrity etc.

But you probably already know that.

I work with a lot of bands, "producers," etc. Most love the new CDs. A pity. None ever complain about the sonic differences between the analog/digital. NONE know what a Gretch, or a Rich is supposed to sound like through a VOX etc. they have no real basis for comparison.

None have the equipment necessary to properly audition the vinyls. Most of the catalog is already walking around on iPods.

Preserve/restore the original recordings in al their glory. Lock them away. Someday they'll be called out by people who will understand them and thrill to them.

For now, the MP3 is more than enough to satisfy a market that would have a difficult time telling the difference anyway.

And thanks again for the absolute brilliant site. I look forward to exploring and learning.
