Is it LAME that Izotope doesn't offer free upgrades for Ozone?

I think it plain sucks... Bought the plug five years ago and I think the upgrade to 5 should be free or of minimal cost...

You've got 5 years worth of use out of the one you bought and you think that a completely revamped version with all new features should be for free?

I'm not sure that's entirely fair on the people who have spent hundreds and thousands of hours developing that new version. Incremental updates... sure, operating system updates, yeah probably. Entirely new version... hmmm.

Perhaps if they were totally abandoning support for the old version you may have a point too, but I think 'free' is asking a bit much.

How much is the upgrade anyway?

EDIT: Ok, couldn't find an upgrade price advertised.

Major upgrades are seldom if ever free. The earlier upgrade price was over-the-top but it was reduced to $99 so most of us are happy now.

I'm guessing this is sarcasm or irony, or you've never programmed before in your life. I think the upgrade from 4 to 5 could be slightly cheaper, but otherwise the price is fine. [UPDATE: They've just changed the pricing from 4 to 5 - makes sense).

ok fair enough... but I think $99 would be better... COCKOS feels the same way as me apparently, and they have a DAW which in a sense, is more complx than a mastering plug.

All the upgrades for REAPER are free for life.

I don't feel this upgrade is worth the dough.

There is a Sony mastering U-matic machine here that cost around $30K new and is now worth $30.

And people complain about $99 upgrade price for an all in one mastering package.

Everybody wants everything for free. How do you think they are even able to even improve on their products? It takes investment and time and man power to produce this new product. They've got a cost of doing business too! They have employees and buildings with lights, heat, water, phone, internet......etc

No money for them would put them out of business then we eventually have none of their great products from them anymore.

Who's gonna create this great product if you put them out of business?

Doesn't make a lick of sense.

I understand being broke and having a hard time but we gotta suck it up be patient, work hard and save then buy it.

Sorry for my rant.

then dont buy it

you should only be buying/upgrading when you can make enough ADDED revenue to pay for it within a year

No need to apologise, Jason.

Very tongue in cheek answer here... if you are too cheap to buy it...

Just wait for it to appear on a WAREZ site and download it for free.

Writing software takes time and money. Software businesses have to stay in business. To do so means they have to charge for their products and upgrades to them. Some companies have student discounts for people who are in school and not making much money. If you are a student ask the company if they offer educational discounts. If you are making money of the software or using it as part of a hobby making music then you have to pay for the upgrade.

Case closed...

For now. You aren't their customer. The investment banker who takes them public or the large corporation who buys them is their actual customer.

Actually it isn't even true, you get 2 free (major) updates, then you have to pay again.

Good answer! I didn't get what you meant at first..... but the Reaper project is from that Winamp guy isn't it? Can't remember the chaps name, but yeah - history tells us that he's playing the loooong game.

I was very close to writing that myself but was a little wary of getting my botty smacked by the mods.

This is my understanding as well. I bought Reaper 3 and got Reaper 4 for free but will have to pay for Reaper 5 if I chose to upgrade when it's released.
