Just ordered another case of RMGI 900 tape

My former thread about updates on ordering seems to have been deleted,
so. . .

Just ordered another case of RMGI SM900 tape. 20 reels of 1/4" on metal reels.

Thankyasomuch RMGI!

Bought some new 1/2" this week, works great!

Next week I'm getting some new leader tape.

Wheeeee!

Closest thing to a tweet I've ever done.

Cool, I bought a ton of Quantegy GP9 pancakes and put them on precision reels a TV station was throwing away. I'm set for a long, long time.

Sounds like a run on rmgi tape is going on. Just out of curiosity, why is that?

I see that Pyral (which was part of emtec/basf a long time ago) has bought the formula rights... back I guess... from RMG .. which itself got the formula and the equipment from Emtec a few years ago.

It looks like the production and formula is simply moving back to France.

Or did I miss something?

Ordered 6 cases of SM900 last month and another 6 cases this month of 1/4" and 4 cases of 1/2". RMGI is the best.

ATR Magnetics formula sounds better & it's more reliable in my experience.

I'm a newbie when it comes to tape and reels but I'm using ATR and I've been enjoying the results.

I'm curious though to try out RMG... Maybe I'll order a few next time!

Oh that smell--enjoy your tape and spread the word here.

I'm committed to SM900.

Production moving from Holland to France is hopefully not a big deal. I'm calling the head of RMGI in USA today to discuss the situation. Then I'll have the real news.

Both ATR and RMG-900 tape work/sound great here.

Slightly different sonic flavor, and of course.... smell.

Although the cheap soft aluminum flanges they use nowadays are less than desirable, often are bent or warped.

So I've been acquiring a few vintage flanges from the past decades, far better quality, and almost always straight and true.

We were paying a bit less, maybe €40/reel of SM900 in 1/4", but I haven't bought any in a while.

It's just part of the cost of doing business.

Here in the USA, 1/4" SM900 is around $49-$60 per reel on a metal reel. Plastic reels are $10 less.

I am buying cases of 20 reel pancakes and winding them on to reels here at our place. 20 pancakes SM900 is around $560 shipped.

SM900 pancakes were delivered, box was opened and the SMELL came out.

The whole room smelled like tape. Of course it did not smell as much as it will when the reel is sitting on a heated up machine.

The JOY of tape.

Thankyasomuch! RMGI, Don Morris and Full Compass.

Mmmmm... pancakes.

We used to call Agfa "GAGfa" ... and thought we were clever. 996 was the best smelling stock, imo.

Im very glad to see that there is not one post about shedding. Seems this is no longer an issue. Also good to hear some prefer ATR, good to have options.

Has anyone of you guys used SM900 or SM911 on machine calibrated for other type? e.g. PER528?

I've used RMG 900 (layback) on my ATR-102 that was biased and calibrated with Spitz's ATR tape.

Works/sounds fine.

Just used RMG 911 for the first time today. No shedding, sounds beautiful. Any comments on the difference between 900 and 911?

900 is +9 tape, pure and open, nice for recording where you want to capture the source as perfectly as possible, but to tape.

911 is +6 tape, nice and smooth, for recording where you'd like a little bit of the tape sound and glue (i.e. compression) to be present.

Just as a rough guide.

No shedding with RMG 900 either IME.

Cleaning the heads after an hours' use,

almost nothing shows on the cotton swab.
