Slightly more shed with ATR tape, but still not much at all.

I think there may be more coating on ATR, as it claims to handle +10 level.

And it sounds a little different than RMG 900, maybe fatter,

'course that may depend on other factors such as alignment, calibration, over-bias, etc.

I did several projects on both formulae this month, both work great, no preference.

But I am glad there are Two companies making tape, a little competition is usually a good thing.

Best, JT

Ordered a case of six 1/2" reels of SM900. Tape is running great on a Studer A807 4 channel. On this machine the tape offered a freq. response of
17Hz to 23.5kHz.

I ordered 6 reels of ATR 1/2 tape and it sounds great! But I wouldn't have thought to mention it until I read your post. I mean, we own a tape recorder and use the tape that sounds best to us so we order it!

More power to those ordering tape. You are supporting our tape indushtry. As for the reason for this thread, (which I started) you're catching on if you find it humorous.

I thought you started the thread to defend RMGI tape!

Around that time, a number of ppl complained that it was shedding! I decided to try RMG as they sell it at a dealer in Toronto whereas ATR has to be shipped in from the US. As the posters said, it shed like crazy and I threw it out.

Which is why I just ordered another 6 rolls of 1/2" ATR (plus many more before that)!

More power to you, Andy.

I have not suffered any shed for decades. There just isn't that much bad tape out there.

The prior thread here and this one were started to alert others that the smell of tape is continuing here at my place and other's places. Plus it's just plain fun to alert others when some tape is coming in the door.

Certainly it's true that I only use RMGI. And yes, I do defend it from those who enjoy trolling about shedding and so-called slitting issues. Meanwhile I'm making a major league piano record on analog tape.

I talked to the head of RMGI last week and he said that all product in the worldwide pipeline now is still from tape made in Holland. In France, at the Pyral plant, they are about to begin slitting jumbo reels made in, and shipped over from, Holland. RMGI coating lines in France will start up some time later this year and by Fall the French tape product will begin to be sold.

He also said that RMGI tape sales have been good so far this year.

The tape is great, no problems here.

But the cheap warped aluminum flanges are crap : - )

So I've been hunting down superior vintage empty reels from eB*y.
