Referncing to K-14 without metering.

Hi,

I've been asked to submit my mixes at K-14 for the mastering engineer.

I dont have any special metering plugins apart from a few different RMS meters.

Can i presume that -14dBFS RMS would be the equivalent? That's how im understanding it at least.

Thanks for any help.

Cheers
Nathan

Do not presume that, because you would be submitting a mix at the wrong requested levels

As long as you leave some headroom and don't over-compress or limit the mix you'll be fine.

I can't imagine telling my clients to submit mixes at a certain specification. That's the producer's job and none of the ME's business.

Yes, it's kind of strange. Especially with a certain specification like that being "requested."

What's up Greg!
Long time no see! Can't believe it's been almost ten years since I tortured you with those two projects I had (eastern standard & Brock)

Hope all is well!

Don't "submit." And tell the premastering clerk that you want the premaster to play comfortably at K-14 when s/he's _done_!. Loudness Wars are for executives. Occupy Headroom (with reasonable Headroom)!

The K-14 would be derived by setting the monitor first at the position where -20 dB RMS pink noise is playing out of only one loudspeaker and at 83 dBSPL-C "Slow." Then move the monitor gain knob counter-clockwise (most likely) to attenuate the signal by 6 dBSPLC- "Slow." This is K-14 for your room. K-12 is for loud Pop with a modicum of life still left in it, but only a modicum. There is a penalty whenever premastering louder than K-20, iuam.
