one was done ITB and the other on 2' tape.
Is there one better than the other ? http://www.box.net/shared/915gf81ui192v50mj3va
Special thanks to Invader for his great acid lines and pre- production participation. Special thanks to Don for this mix and production fine tuning as well.

Done by 2 different studios if it wasn't clear - separated by 10k miles. Looking forward to read your poll results!

Master 1 sounds musical but yet muffled, reminds me of 80's
Master 2 sounds good, but seems to be lacking musicality of 80's

Eq seems to be correct on both versions, but compression and musicality is different. May be master 2 sounds over pushed? for youtube this might be better version.

Master1 is very boring and 2 dimensional. Muffled and nasal sounding for sure.

Master2 is deeper, wider and much more impressive sounding.

I hope Master2 is the one you paid the most for!

Thank you gentlemen for your very accurate and detailed feedbacks !
Very interesting -

as mentioned both studios are using different mastering approaches, will let you know which approach seemed to please more people (so far). I won't give mastering studio names if you don't mind as it's could be different for another song/another day...

It sounds like master 2 is much better! The kick is much more in my face and the whole song is brighter. It made me knod my head while the first did not.

Awesome song btw!!!

Thanks a lot Orange Guy for your nice comment and statement on mastering versions. I've listened to them in my car and it was more obvious for me than yesterday evening ( with headsets only) .

Both have too much upper presence [3kHz], it is fatiguing.

They both sound pretty well clipped/crushed/overcompressed/mangled in the mix/mastering process so I don't see why it matters that one of them was bounced through tape. Both of them have a ringing in the high end and sound overcompressed. I'm just saying if it were my project, I wouldn't accept either. Though #2 was obviously clipped quite heavily before the master as well as in the master itself, it does have a little bigger sound, it's just painfully distorted.

Did you say one of the mixes was bounced to 2" tape? That's awfully huge for a stereo mix.

Thanks for all comments given so far, I think it's a fair feedback related to the over compression aspect (it's a cumulation at all steps of the process), we've lost dynamics tutt will see what we can do in the future.
master 2 is definitely better in my opinion as well ( see poll results ), yes it was a bit more expensive than 1 ( but hey it's an indie project so really low figures here -

Random observation: In the analog (second) master, the level is hotter on the left channel. To the point of serious distortion at 2:13 when the song resumes.

thanks to all for your listening, to close the loop here is the final version we decided to select (another mix approach but still the same analogue mastering studio), hope you will like it,

cheers,

Thanks a lot Storyville/rybluestar for your listening, it is another approach and the final version we decided to keep (mix was done on an Helios console and transferred to a studer multi-track reel to reel, add to that the tape mastering and it gives an analogue vibe to the whole), without being an expert on that it's the cumulative efx I guess. Of course the man behind the console is also important !
You can download for few days more the song (1 mix with 2 mastering versions which was the initial thread goal and the new mix approach mastered with mastering facility number 2).

Cheers,
Isham
