SADIE PCM8 - data storage and backup

Hi there fellow gearsluts

I'm currently spec'ing a mastering chain for a university assignment. Currently doing the write up, everything's going swimmingly except one minor detail.

I've included a SADIE PCM8 system with the mastering suite as my central DAW, I've got all the info on it, except how it stores audio data.

Can anyone enlighten me? it looks like it has an internal SATA drive on the front but i cannot find a single bit of literature to verify this.

Does the PCM8 have internal SATA drive slots? if so how many?
what would be the best way of backing up to an external drive, i've seen some places where its says that it is firewire compatible, is there a firewire port on the unit? is there a more effective way of doing this?

I'd appreciate any help I can get, the report's due tomorrow (in 18 hours at the latest) and everything else is written up except my the SADIE storage bit.

Off i go to trawl through the internet. SADIE I know you're great but please, PLEASE put out some easy to find comprehensive specs. I am but a humble servant trying to extoll the greatness of the PCM series!!

SADiE Products: PCM8 8in/out digital audio workstation

"Specifications of the host PC change periodically and there are various PC related options for HDD size, CD burner, graphics cards etc. Please contact us for details."

I'm sure the fastest way is to open up the box and take a look inside. The used disk types should be easy to identify.

As this is a university assignment we do not have the equipment to check, we just have to research it. I have been unable to find out online and did not ask in earlier SADIE enquiries to their sales team.

If anyone who owns a SADIE reads this I would really appreciate their input.

The SADiE systems I used were ordered configured with hot-swappable drive bays. This should still be do-able. It also had an Exabyte 8mm tape drive for project back ups as well as DDP masters.

Just ring Steve or Mark at SADiE - they know, and they'll tell you.

01353 648888 - tell them Eric sent you and says hi.

SADiE does offer the possibility to use many different drives both internal and hot swappable. Ours has 3 internal hard drives + a C drive. There is one hot swapable drive in a Kingston bay as well.

As far as back up is concerned there is a built in back-up facility in SADiE 5 software. While formerly this was done to Exabyte tape, we now back up the entire edl and sound files on a hard disk via USB2.

While firewire is possible, PC's used to run SADiE are increasingly only offering USB 2 and USB 3.

Back-up has been very reliable. For all else contact SADiE.
