Probably more people asked this question but i still don't get it. What does, solve, avoid a linear phase eq ? and why use it in a mastering job etc.? Already thanks for all the help! Cheerios, |

Linear-phase EQ is mostly a red herring, beloved of people who don't understand phase. For a start, the audibility of phase is low (certainly not zero, as has been proved a few times, but low). Very often EQ is actually trying to reverse a physical effect which probably wasn't linear-phase in the first place - far more likely for it to have been minimum-phase, which is completely different. So in practice the difference between linear phase and any other kind of EQ is likely to be very small, if the amplitude response is identical. Since, however, it's actually quite hard to make two filters with identical amplitude response, most people who think they have compared linear phase EQ with non-linear have actually really been comparing two slightly different amplitude responses. |

Also, while the audibility of phase (especially at HF) is somewhat controversial, the audibility LF pre-ringing is not. DC | |

All I know is that I use linear phase less and less. Just about the only thing for it these days is tight notches. Sometimes I get stuff that has a sharp ~2kHz resonance coming from the guitars, and LP seems to mess less with the rest at high Q's.
