"B" Speakers for A/B comparison?

I've got a good pair of main monitors (Dyn BM6A Mk23 + BM9S Sub) to work with, but I'm looking for another pair, cheap and bad for A/B comparison.

From what I've heard and read, these can be anything from cheap PC speakers to small studio monitors, but I'm not looking to spend another 500$ for speakers I'll prolly use 5% of the time. So preferably cheap and widespread PC speakers or something similar.

However, as these can be anywhere from decent to horrid and beyond, I really need some suggestions. So if anyone has any tips on which speakers do the job, I'd appreciate it.

how about a pair of avantone mixcubes. I use those as my b-speakers for a totally crappy sound.

a worst-case-scenario playback situation (ok, I'm sure there are worse cases. ie: walking down the street listening on your nokia)

For A/B comparison I've got next to my Duntech Crown Prince a pair of Bose MusicMonitor on my desk ( Bose Computer MusicMonitor - Computer Speakers - Computer Sound Systems - Bose Multimedia Speakers ). I don't really master on them but i can switch to give customers an idea how it sounds on small (laptop) speakers. thumbsup

I was recently thinking the same - if you want to know how they will sound in the "real world", use something consumers think is good.

This link is for the $99 dollar version
Bose Companion 2 Multimedia Powered Speaker System - Computer Speakers - Computer Sound Systems - Bose Multimedia Speakers

I tried the Mackie HR5 for the "B" (actually "C") and they are all boom & sizzle, so I guess would qualify for that; but for 350/pr I expected better!

The problem with cheap bad speakers is that there's so many variations on the theme. If you use the information from a particular set of crap speakers to adjust the sonics, will it translate to other crap speakers?

Have a pair of ns10's that was supposed to be B speakers. They are seldom in use. A single Fostex 6301D in the middle (true mono) have turned out to be a lot more useful as a second reference. It's restricted in bandwidth and power handling, but what it does put out is actually quite accurate. It gives a small and bandwidth limited impression without any gross faults by itself that may lead me to tweak the sound for that particular speaker.

I have been using Mixcubes for quite some time, but I am half tempted to DIY some car stereo boxes with the cheapest OEM Delco speaks I can find as yet another reference.

Something like this:

Amazon.com: Scosche 6-Inch x 9-Inch Speaker Enclosure: Electronics

Bose 101 passives here, you see them everywhere as they're designed as an outdoor speaker. Cheap as chips.
