Multi-band popularity vs single band

In your pro opinion which is the better option when mastering, the multi-band compressor or the single band compressor? I know that situations differ and both are useful, but if the mix is good what is the go to option for you?

If the mix is good, I go with the zero band compressor.

Not DC - but fwiw - the Emperors NuKloze is my favorite zero band compressor.

A multi-band is never a go to. It's the last resort if nothing else works. Give me a good compressor with a high-pass filter and I'm set!

It's a custom unit called "El Bypasso" and incorporates a number of features not found anywhere else. The ratio is fixed at 1:1 the headroom is infinite, the noise and coloration are effectively zero.

It should hit the market sometime next year. I'm already planning my TEC award speech.

In a very sarcastic way - I guess they are saying that doing a great mix is the key to great master, and if the mix already sounds great, why bother putting ANY compression on it.

Whilst the sarcasm may not be the most helpful, please be aware that you have come onto the forum and asked the top 4 questions that get asked constantly. So people read this as 'playtime' I guess. Next time, use the search facility - there are lots and lots of very interesting posts about this topic, and most of them will point back to the mix eventually. Good arrangement, good sound selection being an excellent start. Also small shifts in the timing of mix elements back or forth can do wonders at getting the dynamics under tight control. Don't necessarily buy into the whole 'compression makes thing sound better' brigade. Good EQ and placement will take you a very long way.

The process of mastering has been really overglamourised by companies trying to shift products. Do a really good mix in the first place and forget about trying to put band-aids on broken eggs.

No no - not stupid! Maybe just a little lazy because you did not appear to look for the answers on the forum before asking the question.
