Is using compressors to un-maximize clipping audio a good idea ?

Is the audio already clipped. If it is, the the compressor will just bring it out more.
If your trying to tame peaks and keep the audio signal from clipping, then yes, a compressor is good for that, depending on the settings

If the 'maximisation' is already recorded / rendered then it would be more likely some kind of expander based process to help smooth over the damage, in my book.

I sometimes run clipped audio through the analogue chain and CL-2A, but hardly compressing, just to give it some more life and bounce.

As already suggested, upward expansion will probably be your best bet here. Though subtle use of compression can definitely be helpful too in taking the 'edge' off clipped material.
