fwiw - I have both the API 2500 and Pendulum OCL-2 - and frankly for dance oriented tracks it's extremely rare that I ever choose to use the OCL-2.

For my own ear I find the Pendulum excels for subtle minor smoothing with minimal "default re-eq'ing" once it's put in line, or for handling high ratio, high threshold chores without the effect of the compression being noticeable (often very useful for things like overy dynamic singer/songwriter tracks to glue the vocals to the guitars). So - I use it way more often for jazz, acoustic chamber, folk, etc. than I ever do for dance.

Generally for dance tracks my default is very often no compressor in the chain at all. After this I find I gravitate to my Focusrite Blue 330mk1 - which is a VCA based design with a definite "sheeny" coloration to it with the ability to give a nice transformer based saturation, as well as allowing for some decently long attack times to offset the fact that it can be grabby otherwise - but this is long discontinued so it would be unlikely you could source one. Vertigo VSC-2 is the one comp that is currently made that I've demoed that gives a similar coloration and action to my Focusrite - so you might want to look into this as an alternative to your API 2500 - which I find is incredibly versatile but sometimes still not always the best match for every track.

Best regards,
Steve Berson

I master dance tracks and the Phoenix is getting a lot of use here.
