If I add anything above 14 khz with a filter I think things start to sound unclear. Theese filters of course go down a bit into the frequencies that humans can hear.

When there's much action in that border where hearing disappears I think i sounds unproffessional but adding 7-14 is often nicer.

Is it common to add not at the highest end when you fell the top needs some more action?

Whatever makes the music more enjoyable to listen to. Make sure your monitoring setup (speakers+room) aren't lying to you, and then do whatever benefits the music more greatly, even if it's just a subtle change according to a knob. thumbsup

If thats what it takes, then thats what it takes. Each song is different and you will do different things for every song.

And +1 to Jesse.

The thing is I've been doing this to a lot of songs. It's been my standard and it makes me wonder since it seem to be "standard" to add top

Might seem more common if your working on your own productions and mixes and if you're following your own mixing and eqing patterns and tendencies in the same room.

If you find your self following the same curves on outsides stuff being mixed at other studios your more than likely developing or falling into some bad habits because there's no common denominator.
