Dangerous's DAC vs Avocet's DAC

I'm looking at either the Dangerous ST with the Dangerous A.S.S for DAC duties, OR a Crane Song Avocet as my monitor controller.

Anybody do a shoot out and/or used them both?

I'm going to be testing both units in a couple of days and I'm extremely curious to hear people's experiences purely on the DACs in the two units - Avocet's DAC vs Dangerous's DAC.

These two units are both awesome! They are super clean and to be quite honest, very comparable sound wise. In my opinion, it comes down to which feature set is best for your studio and personal workflow.

I'd ask this in the mastering forum if I were you.

Just want to give a heads up that I have been enjoying excellent customer service from Stefan at Mastering Works/Dangerous.de and the team at Auvi One who are the French distributors of Dangerous.

When I asked Stefan about demo'ing the Dangerous Music monitoring system on Friday, he couriered to me the Dangerous DAC ST from Germany the next business day, and also arranged for me to get a Dangerous Monitor ST from the French distributor right away. WOW.

My preliminary impressions are extremely favourable as the sound is pretty stellar. I normally use a UA 2192 for monitoring, and will do some A/B testing later this week.

More later once I've had a chance to really use the system.

Yes! VERY happy with it. It’s 100% customable and Crispin is very helpful. As far as transparency goes, it’s most likely the best controller out there. The only downside on the C2 is the somewhat complicated routing (hence i prefer to use a z-sys).

Crookwood C2 is great! Easy control and 8x8 digital router. It's not hard at all to route the signals.
Mine is equiped with an DA for monitoring and a DA - AD for my analog chain. Very transparent, love it! Crispin is great too.
Recommended!

And I have the bigger brother version of it for sale! (the 16x16 digital +3 switchable analogue analogue inserts +dac). Bargain.

Would I lie to you?

Well,
I have the Avocet, so naturally, it's better.
If I get the Dangerous, then it will be better.

How's that for a scientific comparison?

How about pros and cons of the avocet vs ST.

Avocet has three builtin digital inputs.Dangerous are addons.

What else besides slight sound ....

Well, I'm looking at the Dangerous ST Controller + the DAC ST as a complete system that's comparable to the Avocet.

I like the Dangerous ST's remote more than the Avocet's specifically the form factor, controls, and layout. I do think that the Avocet's LED ring around the knob is very cool though.

The one thing that may be a draw back to some users though is that the Dangerous system uses D-Subs and not XLR connectors.

I think the talk back system is much simpler (= better!) on the Dangerous especially since it has a little built in mic.

The DAC ST has 4 digital input's with throughs and also a SPDIF on the front rack.

You can control multiple DAC STs with one Monitor ST though so you could easily grow a system that has 8 stereo inputs.

The Avocet remote is sexier looking and that means everything in a High End studio.

The Dangerous remote looks like a gaming controller.

Dangerous's DAC vs Avocet's DAC

Dangerous Monitor here, great unit, very happy with it! Its DAC is really detailed, maybe it's the same as the ST? Never tried Avocet, but I imagine it's in the same pro level.

I have the same problem.....dangerous st or avocet.
am going to buy without listening(foolish I know but I don't think I can go wrong with either...)

My opinions:
dangerous pros:
-what i personally find very useful is the subwoofer function with frequency cut and that you can assign a different setting for each pair of speakers.
- i like the remote functions

dangerous cons:
- the d-sub is really expensive(should think anyone using a dangerous will be using high quality & expensive cables)
so were looking at roughly 2900 € for the whole deal.
d-sub cables also not very flexible...only if custom.
for example: I need stereo jack for fireface800 but xlr for other.
on the outputs I'd need approx. 4 m to subwoofer, 4m to p11 but 1m for amplifier for the ns10....
- yes the remote looks like a game controller :D

anyone know whether avocet can control a subwoofer to different pairs of speakers and roll off the highs on the sattelites?
cause i find the xlr and the spdif much more useful...
and i haven't heard anything bad about the avocet apart from the clicking noise of the volume knob...

personally I don't really like either designs.
qualitywise I think they might be same league but haven't tried yet.

grace also interesting but read that it sort of compresses the sound. don't know how "high standard complaining" this is if you know what I mean.

anyone tested the drawmer hq?!? expensive, great design but what about sound?! not many functions. anyone seen the remote yet?
