Dolby Media Meter 2 in mastering

I realize there are a couple of threads about the Dolby Media Meter 2 already but I wanted a mastering angle on the plug-in.

http://www.dolby.com/professional/pr...ia-meter2.html

(we're in 2010 and Dolby's website doesn't provide screenshots or a demo download. Unbelievable.)

Anyone using it?

Regards,

Holger

I think this product has been the result of tremendous amounts of research and real-world testing, so it could be vaguer.

Application to mastering is left as an exercise for the reader.

Based mainly on speech detection to "objectively measure loudness".. I can't really see its relevance to music mastering.

Yes, as has been mentioned, the algo has been developed to detect and measure dialogue... it gives weird reading on music, I do know that from having left music stems accidentally solo'd while mixing shows. Often it just doesn't read, it basically knows there is no talking happening... you get the "flashing ears" icon telling you that it's waiting for input, instead of a dialnorm number.

I'm on V1 mind you but the core algo isn't any different, I don't think?

It might be whatever "intelligent" code that Dolby has added on top of the LKFS measurements that make it react weirdly, if that's the case. ITU.R 1770-1 (aka LKFS) has extensive testing with music as well, and has a mean deviation of less than 1dB between the algorithm and people's perception of loudness.

There's free meters, if you just want to monitor LKFS short-term...
BBC - OpenSource - Broadcast Audio Production Tools
(hint: visit the project page to download)

I'm not sure if anyone has put out a free/open long-term meter for it yet, or in VST form. The BBC stuff uses PortAudio to connect to your soundcard.

I delivered a commercial to MTV Nordic recently and since everybody is switching to the Leq(R2LB) standard now I feel compelled to check out the possibilities.

Any AU format plug-ins other than the Dolby which is up-to-date on this?

Hi Holger,

I tried (and bought) AudioLeak, but would rather use the Dolby Media Meter myself. AudioLeak is ok, but it doesn't seem to be a priority for the developer as far as updates and development go. It's missing some key features, like file based analysis of 5.1 mixes.

One nice thing about AudioLeak is that it offers several algorithms to choose from besides the LKFS used for broadcast.

There are others, like the free BBC meter already mentioned. I've also asked the developers at Audiophile-Engineering to add LKFS/LU to Spectre, but that too seems to be far from the top of their list of things to do....

Cheers,
Thor
