Big Speakers

Hi All!

Might feel like a strange place to ask this but i think mastering engineers think a lot about speakers ans therefor i´m sure some interesting answers will show here in due time.

I´m looking for big speakers to soffit mount in my new room. I feel like i have the mid/nearfield/small speakers covered. I´m looking for a transient fast big speaker to judge the low, lows and to impress clients and "hype" people with

I don´t mind second hand, rare brands etc as i usually look for gear that are a bit different from the rest of the pack and have the functions i´m after.

I know some of you sit with speakers that cost in the region of a beach side villa but those are out of my league!

Any thought? Are there any good deals under 8000Usd out there?

best regards /Toby

Since I spent all my $ on a water heater today I'll help spend yours.

A few to consider:
Quested Q212
Q212
Tannoy DMT-215
TANNOY System 215 DMT II Studio Monitor
Dynaudio M2, M3P, M4
M3P

I particularly like the suggestion of the Quested 212, but you won't find a used pair for $8k or less. You may, however, find some older Quested 410s for that. Skip the 210 however (except perhaps if you sit each atop a Q115 sub, but there's that $8k problem again).

A quick search shows that Professional Audio Design has a pair of 410s for $7500 with amps and crossovers on their "hot deals" list. That's a great deal if they're in decent shape and not old as dirt.

When I used to intern, like 10 years ago (christ I'm getting old), I worked in a studio with those Tannoy's. They freak'n ROCK massively. I love them. Maybe nostalgia, but they sounded great and impressed the clients consistently.

I'm using a pair right now myself. Rescued them from a storage room. They sound fantastic.

nose around for some T.A.D.s if you can find them. transient response for days and the drivers are used in some of the best custom builds ever made.

Re: Big Speakers!

Thanks a bunch, a lot of scope there.
There seems to be many schools of thought. passive, active, many drivers, few drivers + horns.

Passive & active, pros and cons?

You might take a look at the Sonics Allegra (the one's Brian Lucey uses). They are 7k EUR but you can buy some at Ebay for 3.4k (starting at 2.2k).

You just need to check for transport fees and import duties.

As I can see you're from Europe, so transport would be for free (!!!). And you have some money left for a good amp.

with a little bit luck and/or patience you can get them for less than €2000.-!
i using the allegra now with a used quad 606 (modified), they fit nice together & you get like this a big mastering monitoring for less than € 2500.-!
