Who's still cutting vinyl???

just wanted to see who here is still cutting regularly? we're actually super busy cutting. seems like consumers really like the sound and the artwork. randy kling was over a couple months ago dropping off some odds and ends as he retired from cutting a while back. it was awesome hanging out and learning some tips from the man. what a great guy. maybe we could setup a new vinyl cutting sub-forum under mastering? all 3 of us...haha.

Hi Sean,

Things are good. The current batch of Transco Styli is the best I have seen in a while. The batch before, not so much. Apollo lacquers have been quiet for a long time. The last batch I got that wasn't quiet, was last spring. And they weren't that bad.

Transco sent over some blanks for me to try out....I was sceptical as I remember Transco blanks of old...quite rough and ready they were.

I cut a silent groove on a Transco, and then on an MDC. I have to say I was taken aback at how smooth the Transco was. It was a different heat than the MDC. Both we're very good, but the Transco had the the edge, or lack of it so to speak.

The Transco stylus was clean and consistant on 3 makes of lacquer.

I'm glad to see everyone's busy cutting, long may it continue.

I used to prefer Transco's when they were made by Transco. When Apollo bought them I tried them and didn't like them as much as the Apollo's. I tried again six months later and still felt they weren't as good as they used to be or as good as the Apollo's. Maybe they have gotten better. Did you try the Apollo's?

I did. It was pretty interesting, I did a straight shoot out between Apollo, Transco and MDC. All with a Transco 320 stylus (4 micron facet...I have no idea what the implications of this are....just thought i'd mention it). All silent grooves cut at 100 micron depth....All were very close. The MDC and Apollo's surface noise had more HF content and both lacquers spat a little (I tried various heats),..The transco lacquer had a slightly more broadband surface noise, but no spitiing...probably masked by the boradband noise. I asked another cutter here what he thought, and we both preffered the Transco as the noise was more even.
It was about as interesting as cutting 20 mins of silence on three makes of lacquer of an evening could be

Thanks Sean, good info. I use the regular 320 too. If I was only cutting long sides I'd use a smaller facet for better HF response but if you cut deep with the smaller facets the groove looks nasty. I've tried.

Micropoint put out a brochure that had everything you could possibly want to know about cutting styli. I can scan it and send it to you.

Cutting pretty much every day... Apollo laquers (no problems, but probably due for another Apollo/Transco/MDC comparison), VMS 70 fixed pitch (apart from a bit of MVG (manual vari-groove!).

I`m cutting several Lacquers on our VMS70 and several Vinylcuts on the vinylrecorder a day ... its not a big boom here, but also not a decrease of work...
And colin; yes it would be great to have an extra vinyl - cutting sub forum here ...

The Secret Society of Lathe Trolls is a really nice forum on all aspects of cutting with a subforum for professional cutters as well. I'm sure they would appreciate new members - especially experienced and knowledgeable ones - and more traffic there.

Best regards,
Steve Berson

yep still cutting vinyl regularly, so far this week have done double LP acetate and lacquers & three 12" singles for different clients. The ol' VMS82 is busy as ever!

As an aside, do any of you fellow cutters know of a good supplier of either a Shure VN5xMR or V97XE playback stylus, or somewhere good to repair the former? Had a little accident and we're now using a backup...
