Sony PCM 701es Betamax Mastering

Hi i hope someone can help me, I have a sony betamax sl-hf950 ( Good working order) and i have purchased 2 pcm 701es but cannot get them communicating. I have connected the BNC to phonos, Beta out to video in on the pcm and pcm video out to beta in and the audio in and outs to a dat machine and to a mixing console. when playing back the betamax PCM recording nothing shows on the 701 meters and no sound, i have tried the tracking function on the pcm but the marker does not move.
On test recording the only way the pcm 701 shows any input on the meters is when REC MUTE button is held in when released meters dont register and no sound present, I purchased a second unit to see would that work but it has the same problems. On the betamax i have tried the EDIT swith in on and off position as this is supposed to be the same as the PCM switch on the betamax.
i have a sevice manual for the 701 but no operational manual
Any help would be great as i am wondering am i setting these units up wrong or is it that both sony PCM 701es units have the same fault

Thanksfor any help

There are places like this Sony PCM Manuals and Sony PCM-R500 Manuals, Support and Troubleshooting may have an operations manual for your machine in PDF format.

Not sure exactly what you are trying to do but one problem with BETA was they sometimes only played back well on the machine they were recorded on. When we did BETA transfers in the old days we had 5 different BETA machines that we tried to get the best one for the tape we were trying to playback.

Could you be more specific as to what you are trying to do??? Thanks!

Do you know if there is anything on the tape? Some tapes were also recorded at different speeds but NOT all Beta machines could playback all the different speeds.

SOME PCMs units were designed for NTSC and won't work with Pal or Secam units.

Hope this helps!

Hi thanks for reply, 3 songs were mastered onto a betacam tape in temple lane studios in Dublin in 1988, The machine used was on loan from a studio called STS in temple bar Dublin (where U2 s hit single Desire was recorded) which is now gone. I remember at the time being told it was mastered to betamax. I am now trying to get them onto CD as there is no other copy. as Far as i know the units are connected up correctly, Ihave also purchase 10 new Betacam tapes off ebay and tried to record audio onto these tapes via the PCM but cant record or playback. meters only regester when trying to record when the record mute button is held in when released meters dont register. i have tried PB Mute on and off. Display has PB Mute on Enphasis.

Give the boys at FX Rentals a shout (fxgroup.net) they're extremely helpful and nice and they know an awful lot about formats & machines. Good luck!

Does the Beta deck work with a Beta movie?

I have a 701 and 3 Beta decks. The last time it refused to work it turned out to be a faulty Beta deck.

Just get a Sony 601 and connect its digital out to a DAW and burn the file(s) 1:1 to CD-R and your done.
But beware the emphasis bit status.

Right here. The second is the same file merely passed through a PCM-501.

I have been away a while just to let you all know it was a simple switchable scart required and i transfered the 3 songs to CD. Sold on the 3 units again. Very interesting hearing these recordings and there quality from 1987 not bad for Beta

thanks
