| Ears aren't working Hey everyone. I usually don't post a thread like this but I've hit a wall. I'm not a Mastering Engineer but I'm doing a faux mix/master for a Hip Hop client. Basically, I got the mix sounding pretty good. Now I'm trying to bring it through the "mastering" phase and having some difficulty. I'm going to post up the mix, and then what I did with it. You'll probably hear my main issue with it pretty fast - but I don't want to lead anyone by suggesting what I think is wrong. I need a fresh set of ears and advice on how to make this work.

| Hello sir, because you asked for some feedback here we go: (my 2 cent from listening in headphones at home) The mix sounds good. The master is to bright and possibly high pass filtered. Try to mellow the highs (the mix don't need any extra highs), add some fat at around 220hz, remove the HPF. Add some bass, at 30-40hz. Use broad EQs. small dB changes, about a half to one dB. The compressor is pumping, compress less and use longer attack and release times. If it is the limiter who causes the bright sound use a better one or limit less. Something like that might work for you.

| Frequencies ranging from 1 kHz to 4 kHz needs to be reduced. You have a lot of energy within the 2.5 kHz to the 3.5 kHz regions. This is causing the lack of bass. I take it you mix rock why the vocals are dominating the track? Cheers! |

| Patrick you bastard, that sounds great. Exactly what I want it to sound like. Thanks for the advice, I'll see if I can get it working. As for why the vocals are up, I felt that they and the overall mix sounded best with the vocals up.

| I used, roughly, on the analog eq side of things: around -1 dB, q 1.0, somewhere below 100 around +1 dB, q 1.0, somewhere above 6000 Point is - it is nowhere near any of the aforementioned suggestions based on the specualtions around the frequency balance. Food for your thought. Regards Patrik |
