Waves Vox Rider: implications for mastering?

I wonder how much people do fader riding in the mastering process. I do, quite a bit. It's painstaking but I often do it before my compression/eq/treatment chain, depending on the music and intent.

Don't think I'll be buying this --- do you know how much Peking Duck $400 buys? --- although I would probably sometimes use it if it was free.

funny, few days ago (I do a lot of gain raiding, too) I was thinking about clever plug, which can do it for you, just shave 1-2 dB of loudests peaks....

I'll occasionally do some volume bumps by cutting/crossfading at the clip level in Sadie, usually to bump up a chorus or bring up/down an intro, that sort of thing.

Used to do some automation-based volume changes, but one little computer hickup or failure to save, and you could loose a lot of work.

Gain riding has been a critical feature of my mastering work. It allows me to focus on my compressors/limiters for their tone instead of taxing them for mere volume control. But that's me.

- On the fly?: hardly ever
- Drawing automation levels in the daw?: yes, sometimes - obviously more often with stems.

Definitely on playback - before looping through anything else in the chain.

Agreed on the focus on tone remark ^
